I didn't do a search cause it would probably take me forever to find what I want to know. Please bear with me.

I am a guitar player.
I want a home digital recorder.
I want to be able to transfer what I record to my pc with a usb.
I want at least a couple of inputs for mics.
I don't need a crapload of COSM type effects. No need for amp models as I just want to mic my amp into the thing.
CD burning is unnecessary as I can do that with the pc.
Can you give me ideas as to what I should look at buying?

Thanks in advance,

Brian

Personally, I'd be looking at a decent sound card, a mic preamp, a microphone (a condensor of some kind) and recording/editing software. Track directly to the computer where you can edit/ mix your tracks and burn CDs.

Yo bjh65, welcome to the board! The problem is, most of the small standalone's won't accept 2 mics, don't have USB out, and don't provide phantom power. Here's my solution-
Korg PXR4 Pandora- Has USB out, needs a 128mb card (the 16 meg card that comes with it is useless). It will record 2 tracks simultaneously through its stereo *line* in. So- you need-
M Audio DMP3 2-channel mic preamp. That gives you 2 better channels with phantom power. Pan the 2 channels hard left and hard right, then the Korg converts them to MP2 format. You export to the PC by USB, and you can process the tracks any way you want to once they're in your hard drive.
The PXR4 also has a surprisingly effective drum machine, and is a pretty good tuner. And you get the reverbs and the amp modeling effects whether you want them or not. The built in electret condenser mic is not as bad as you would think, so it's a great traveling companion that you can jack your guitar straight into, sing into, or use for remote recording.
I use this combo with a pair of AKG C2000B's which will do most of what I want. For what you want, probably a Shure SM57 on the cab and Marshall MXL V67G for vocals would be a good choice.
The Pandora is a $400 unit, the DMP3 lists for about $200, but can be had for $120-150 by grinding some balls at Guitar Center. Both mics can be had for $50-$80 apiece. One more thing that's very helpful- EBTECH LLS-2 line level shifter. A $50 little box, it converts 2 channels of +4 line level (pro level) to -10 line level (consumer level), or the other way around. You can use the DMP3 into the Pandora without it, but the DMP3 puts out +4, and the Pandora is looking for -10, so it's really easy to overload the poor little thing with the hot output from the DMP3. This box helps a lot with that problem. Hope this helps-Richie

couldn't he just get the mobilepre which has 2 mic preamps and has a usb output?

Thanks for the advice so far....this place seems to rock!
That Korg seems really cool. I did a search on that and read some good stuff after reading your post, Richard.
