I'm only 17 and began to like rap 2 years ago, and I started making some beats with Cakewalk (Pro Audio 9/Sonar) and many people have listened to them. They all love them, and they're really impressed since I'm 17. I have lots of experience in music since I've played violin for 3 years, piano for 8 years, I've been in a choir for 8 years (lol, i know it sounds stupid but it helped me out a lot...), I've been in a punk band for 3 years (we had played only 11 shows). I've been able to do all of this with ease since I have perfect pitch ear (I don't know if you've heard about this, but suppose I'm in another room, and you play any note on a piano I can't see, I know instantly what note it is, and if you play a chord, even a weird one, I can tell all the notes you've played.) I made 32 beats in 3 months really easily (the most complicated one took me 1h30 to make), and about 10 of them are really high quality. Someone asked me to make techno remixes of Escape from Enrique Iglesias and Cry from Mandy Moore, and even though I don't really like this music, it turned out pretty good.

Now I'm getting many offers, and some MCs are ready to pay me up to 50$ for a beat. How should I deal with this? I'd like to get some cash, take courses, buy better stuff... and I'd like to get a reputation. What should I do? I mean, if I ever sell a beat for 50$, and the MC i sold it to makes a lot more money, I think it would kinda sucks...

What do you suggest?

Well lets start like this......

How you doing DJ17?!?!?!!?

Is sonar the only Tool your using to make your music? Next, I was wondering is there a place i can go to hear some of your music? Next, When these MC's contact you to buy some of your beats, what exactly do they want from you? What you need to do is copyright your beats and only sell them on the terms that they will be used for Demo tape use only, not for natinal distribution. Meaning you still keep the rights to your music just in case that beat goes to the "big time". Basically so you won't lose any money on the beat. Understand?

I hope this helped a little. Hit me back

Well these MCs have lyrics, and everything, but they can't make good beats so they ask me to make a beat for them. i mean some of these mcs are talented enough to get well known (in some way) in 2 or 3 years... so i don't wanna sell a beat for 50 bucks if they make a whole lot of money with their song and i don't get anything...

yeah i only use Sonar or Pro Audio 9... it probably sounds really pathetic but i don't have so much money... i can't buy lots of stuff... i imagine if i did i could do some way better stuff. still Sonar helps me a lot, cause whenever i have an idea i can just write it, listen to it and see if it sounds good... honestly it takes me 30 mins max to write the music... i usually spend another hour trying to get some good sound, and just trying to improve... well i don't have time to finish this post so i'll just finish it later

see you

yeah... i usually phone people to make them listen to my beats. i still haven't found out how to put my work on wav or mp3, other than recording it with a mic, which REALLY sucks, since i can't get much bass out of it, and the quality is the worst shit i've ever seen...

how to make a wav out of your work is written clearly in the cakewalk support though... i just can't find what they're talking about... maybe my sound card is not good enough to do that...--- if you wanna hear some of my music try to figure out where's the problem...---

they're talking about arming one open track with a source of stereo, which i can't do, and in my soundcard's mixer, i can't find the "What You Hear" thing...

I'm using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9, I use Windows 98, an SB PCI128 (soundcard which probably sucks a lot).

I got Yamaha's SXG-70 SoftSynthetizer.... i don't know what it is exactly, but it's the thing i select in Midi Output Ports...

anyways... i'll be working this summer so i plan to buy a new soundcard, a new comp and new speakers this summer, so i'll probably be able to record properly.

by the way DjTonyMOMO, your shit is really good, we have a different style but i like it

Thanks alot man

Thanks for the props DJ17. i really want to hear your stuff too. Hit me back when have a link to your music. Holla Back ONE

Hey DjTonyMOMO

I wanted to ask you a few questions.

1.What are you using to make your beats
2.Did you ever go to some school or have taken courses to do that?
3.Do you make any money out of your beats?
4.Should I learn how to use turntables and stuff, cause i really don't know,
5.If yes, does it cost a lot, and is it tough to learn? Can you learn it by yourself? (I learned how to use Cakewalk alone, and I'm a really good self-taught guitarist (i'm in a band, we give concerts and make some money (not much but we do lol))

thnx a lot

Ben

Well DJ17.................

Heres the anwsers to your questions DJ17...........

1. Well I use the following:

Akai MPC2000 with 32mgbs
Roland Xp-80 Synth with 2 expansion cards
Zoom Sample Player
2 Technic 1200's
Roland VS-880 8 Track Recorder
Vestex PMC Mixer
Small Vestex Back-Up Mixer
Alesis midiverb Effects Rack
Alesis EQ
Gemini Old School Table Top EQ
Alesis R-10 Monitor Amp
Tannoy Studio Monitors
Behringer 16 channel Mixer
Sony Dat Recorder
Harmon Kardon CD Burner
Denon Cd Players
Denon Tape Deck
and about 4000 Records
Korg MS-2000 synth (COMING SOON)
Old school Casio SK1 (COMING SOON)
Pro Tools and Upgraded Comp (COMING SOON)

2. No I never took any courses to make beats. I learned on my own to work all the equipment. Trust me it takes time to learn it all. And A good ear.

3. Right now I don't sell my beats primarily because I make them for the Artists on my label. But in the near future when I get more time, I will start selling beats. But right now having 2 kids its really hard to do anything. Family comes first. :)

4. I believe anyone who is incorparated with Hip_hop music should have some working knowledge of a DJ Set-UP.

5. Well if you buy Good DJ Equipment, like Technic Turntables and a Vestex Mixer. You can spend at least $1200.00. But if you want just a basic set-up with semi decent stuff like a pair Gemini PT-2000 turntables and a small Gemini Mixer you can spend at least $600.00

I learned by just trial and error. By teaching myself and practicing every free minute I had.

Good luck on your Production and Turntable venture. If you need anything else DJ17 Hit me back. ONE

Could you two peep and reply to my thread regarding my synthesizer and my computer? Thanks.

selling beats

listen to the man about copyrighting and selling under the agreement (video tape or written agreement) that the beat is for demo use only.

also..50 bucks is too cheap these days.

average here in philly is 400-800 local.

yeah... when i find out how to make my beats in wav it should be ok...---

by the way, is there a place where you can find lots of rappers that need beats? cause i can make many beats really fast, (and that means lots of money really fast). any ideas where i could find some?---

You need to start, at least, posting your beats on the net.

But before that you need to MIXDOWN your tracks to WAV. file or MP3 file.

You have a lot to learn. You should do some searching around this BBS. ;)

peace...

sure i do have a lot to learn... i'm only 17... and i haven't even been working with cakewalk for a year

but anyways where on the net should i put my music and how?

but isn't it easy for rats to steal my music if i put it on the net???

Well YOu can post.......

You can post them everywhere. Go to Hip-Hop Message boards, et an MP3 page. Go to google.com and Type in Hip-hip in the search engine and will list maybe a million things for you to look up. :)

There is another thread in this forum. right now at this moment, that describes how to post your song on the net.

posting beats

I can tell you how to post ur beat with crappy sound quality . ;-P
Maybe then they wont wanna steal it.
