First off nice vocals!
I'd offer that the vocal needed to come up at the start (heads' and tails' set impressions in a song.
But farther in what's needed is just some leveling of the voc overall.

Some compression would help tame the louder spots, but even better would be to do some envelope volume automation if you can to bring up low the spots, maybe even the hot spots down first. Automation' BTW leans towards keeping it in a more of natural flavor, compresson for a more affected sounding approach.

Next impression would be watch the blends on the voc doublings. The level of first one hits a bit too hot, makes a bit of a shift in the mix picture you'd set from 'solo voice to a 'voc with support mode.

Agree with mixsit on everything he said. And whoa that vocal track is awesome!

Thank you very much for that feedback. I don't know anything about envelope automation, so I'll try and educate myself. I defo see what you mean about the opening vocal quietness.

Thanks for taking the time to listen, I'm hoping to "show & tell" this and a few other tracks to get us some good club/bar gigs. Cheers.

May I ask how you listened? Because I mixed on my monitors, then used headphones, then just an iMacs speakers and finally my own hifi system. The only spot I haven't tried is the car stereo, which often a place of disastrous mixes!! Lol

I was on my monitors. The intenet pc is connected, but normally I'd just be on headphones if that main side' didn't happen to be up.

I've tweaked the start vocal and backing voc, per your suggestions. Enveloping is a bit beyond me at the moment, but I'm looking into it. Thanks again for checking it out.

It sounds great, amazing vocals. I listened to it on my Monster Turbines. I am no expert so this could be really stupid but to me it seemed like the bass was a little muddy, but that could be just a personal preference thing or stylistic. Also on the vocals when you get loud at some points it almost gets to distorting, I think somebody suggested this but putting a tiny bit of compression on it could help. These are just suggestions and I am not saying you are doing anything wrong. I have learned to mix basically by just experimenting and trying things I find on the internet and forums like this one.

Hey guys and gals

There are no gals here. Just guys. Lonely, lonely guys...... LOL! :D

Awesome all around!

First, don't cut around 200-250. Have you applied high pass filters on tracks that don't need the low frequencies? That can take out a lot of mud.

What type of bass were you using? It sounds like an upright bass. Those can be very hard to record. Maybe boost the higher frequencies a TINY bit to give it a little life because it DOES sound a tad dull.

The vocals. I think the main vocals should come up. They should be on par with the clean guitar during that short solo. The clean guitar was louder. Much louder.

Last, and this is from a producing aspect, it didn't feel like there was any high point in that song. It sounded somewhat repetitive with a solo breaking in here and there. Stack some instruments during high parts (ex. the "No more, no more's" and that last note that the singer belted.)

Thanks for all this help and advice.

Would you believe that upright Bass, is a GarageBand software instrument, I played it on a midi keyboard. I did drop the bass out of the acoustic guitars because I've learnt previously they are notoriously boomy. So, yeah, I'll experiment with some high boost on the Bass.

I take your point about the 'no high point'... I'll have to think about that one - maybe some dramatic percussion, toms and/or cymbals?

Thanks heaps for taking the time to listen and offer your pearls of wisdom, I really appreciate it. Cheers!

Ya go with his advice, he probably knows what he is doing much better than I do.

Hey Michael, I appreciate your comments, everyone has different ears and methods and I'm damned sure you ALL know more than I do! Lol.
Cheers mate.
