Newbie to drum loops: Advice needed!

G'day folks!

I record as a hobby and want to begin delving into the world of electronic drum looping (don't have the $$$ or space for a good souncding drum kit right now).

I have been looking at Drum Kit From Hell Superior and have heard good things about the quality of the samples.

I'm wondering how most people here set up their looping software. I currently use Cubase SX for multitrack recording. What are some good products to use for drum looping? How do you implement these products with Cubase(or whatever recording medium you use) with a base set of drum samples?

Also, would you suggest getting a midi drum pad for triggering the beats, or is a method like using FruityLoops and mapping the beats out a more typical approach?

I'm looking into Reason 2.5 as a possible piece of software to use to make this all happen, but again, I'm extremely ignorant and could use lots of help and recommendations.

I think Reason is a great tool for you for many reasons (no pun intended). Not only do you have a great step sequencer with access to a ton of samples, but you also have a Rex loop player, (many drum loops provided). You can also make your own rex files if/when you get a real kit.

Reason works very well with Cubase, just make sure you turn Cubase on first, then Reason. When you're finished, close Reason first, then Cubase.

If you have a keyboard, you can use that to record (via midi) drum beats, but an electronic drum pad would be better IMHO. My housemate likes to tape a drum trigger to the desk, then tap on the desk to record midi drums. Works great.

If you're looking for a nice drum pad, you could definitely check out the akai MPD16. I use reason and think it's great, just make sure you get Recycle too or else you won't be able to stick the loops into reason. I also use ableton live 4 and acid, both of which are great.
 
I don't like drum loops. I say go midi and record your own drum loops direct to tape. Then work with that.
