I got a Tascam DP-008 for the holidays. I'm mainly trying to mic my acoustics. Ive used the mics on the recorder and a Shure mic I have. They sound good, but need compression. Is there a way to compress the sound while still using an external mic? Thanks.

If you wanted to go microphone into an outboard compressor then into the Tascam but then you always have that file compressed. So you'll have to experiment and then be very happy with what you get for a final track.

Can you compress the acoistic after its on the Tascam? It doesnt have any onboard effects so I wasnt sure? Thansk for your help.

Do you have a compressor? There don't appear to be any on the Tascam unit...

I can play the guitar into a compressor pedal and use the onboard pickup from the guitar, but i was trying to figure howto mic it and get the sound of the guitar better. It needs a little compression I think. Has a few uneven bright spots...

Like Armistice is asking ..... you'll need a compressor. Possibly come out of the Tascam through the compressor then back into a channel of the Tascam.
Wait ..... can you play a track off the Tascam (acoustic guitar track) at the same time as rerecording it to an other track once going through a compressor? I don't think you can. But I may be mistaken.

I'll assume you're talking about an electric guitar compressor stomp box type of thing... I'm not sure that I'd be doing that with a miked acoustic guitar, as I suspect it will add noise that you won't want. And I'm also not sure you can do what moresound is suggesting and take an out, via your pedal, then put it back in.... I don't think you can either, but haven't got time to read the manual.

Assuming this thing interfaces with other modern devices, you may be better off exporting your track to PC and applying some form of software compressor there via a DAW program...

Then there's always the question of why you think it needs compressing? What's the problem you're trying to solve? Can it be attacked (compressor joke... chortle chortle..) via other means... technique, for instance?

I use a lot of acoustics and I rarely compress them, only if there are big transients through heavy strumming in up temp songs, usually... dynamic range is good!

Good luck:)
