If you just want a device/software to produce backing tracks to play along with (not pro recording) what is the best way to get this? is a drum rythm machine good or are there software based solutions?

not looking to spend a ton of money. I've noticed som Boss drum/rythm machines on ebay but I don't know enough about them to make an educated purchase.

THanks,
Rut

i don't know much either, but i do know boss sounds better than zoom imho...
i bought the dr-880..it's bad ass..but have fun learning how to make an original beat sound the way you want with that
the alesis sr-16 has been out forever so it had to be ahead of its time..i've heard some good recordings made with it and you can score one for 80-100 bucks on ebay....
maybe i should have bought one instead
i was told the dr-880 is better  i dunno....
but with my experience with the dr-880 midi ins and outs are important for programing so read up on midi as well..
and if you learn anything about all this stuff e-mail me and teach me??? :D
good luck

roland R8, roland R8, roland R8, roland R8

here's a laugh

my ol' man used an R8 for years right, so he used to mark it down on the sleeves as "drums-Mike Rochip"

so when a obviously technically retarded reviewer gave praise to "Mr. Rochip for his fine stick work" we here convulsed in fits of hysterical laughter.........

Mike Rochip..................c'mon!!!!!

LMFAO~~still

 guess i need to be over there on your side of the pond to understand that???? ,, or a drum player..

everything toontrack does sounds great..i can't believe someone assured me that all drum software sounds cheesy...
they have a demo of a sony act that claims only a few tracks were created from scratch...impressive for 179.00... really starting to consider putting my machine on ebay????

I got it the first time, that's great!

There's a track on an Allan Holdsworth record where the drums are credited to Mac Hine! :D
