I'm trying to create a backing track for my 3-piece band to play along with. I've got a guitar track and a click track that I made with Redrum. I need to pan the drum track all the way to one side, and the guitar track to the other. The reason behind that is to be able to send the drum track to the drummer's headphones and the guitar track to the PA. I"ve heard that the only way to do this is to create separate aux input tracks for each track and then pan those to either side. However, I can't figure out how to assign the tracks to the separate aux inputs. I think it probably has somehting to do with a "bus", but I don't know what the heck that is. Can someone help? Does this make sense? Thanks so much in advance!

what are you using for a DAW software? Sonar? acid? nuendo? etc........

this will help clarify......some programs require difernt things to do, when dealing with MIDI.

for example......

IN My Sonar 4, i can create the midi and it will show up in one of my "tracks", but as a midi file. ill then have to "bounce" or " freeze" the track into an Audio wave file....then i can do what ever i want to it as far as panning/add effects...etc......

Using Protools and Reason Adapted

Not sure what DAW means, but I'm using Protools and Reason adapted for MIDI. Does that help?

sure......Protools and reason are DAW softwares "Digital Audio Workstations".

unfortuntly....i have no experience in those 2 programs.

im still having a hard time understanding what your trying to do. it sounds to me like you would need Aux "outputs" to send each track to a specific destination, which in your case is the drummr, and the PA system.

on each track you have now ( one drum, one guitar)...couldnt you just re-assign the output to each track to a specific destination? and once you do that.........does your soundcard have more than one output so one can go to the drummers headphones, and the other to the PA system?

I know how to do it with audio, bussing and whatnot, but for midi i'm lost.

For bussing, like bryank does, i bounce it to an audio file then the freedom of sending to different places is a bit more...well... free! :p

I can try that, but how do I bounce to an audio file? Please help? I know very little about this.

Put pt in record with an audio track selected, then make sure Reason Adapted is coming thru that track as a ReWire slave.

Then roll pt for the length of the song --- if you want to track midi in pt you have to do it in real time, or else mute all other tracks and 'render to disk', then import the track back into the file.

This should be in whatever instruction manual you got with pt or with Reason Adapted...

I'll certainly give it a shot, although "make sure Reason Adapted is coming thru that track as a ReWire slave" sounds almost like Greek to me (at least the Rewire Slave part). I don't know what ReWIre is, nor do I know what a "slave" is. I can't emphasize enough that I know next to nothing about PT. I also don't have a manual. I do appreciate your help though. If possible, could you walk me thru step-by-step? I know how to create an audio track, but as far as anything after that (Rewire, slave, etc), I'm lost. Thanks so much! By the way, my yahoo messenger is phillwarner

Dude, if you don't know much about a program - fiddle with it!

The 'help' menu is always a good place to start, Reason tells you all about ReWire and how to use it, just do a search until you find what you're looking for. I don't use ProTools so can't give you any more advice...

well....

with PT, you have to have the midi track accompanied by an audio track. the audio track is where you will adjust your pan settings, just as you would with any other audio track.

watch the DVD that comes with pro tools if you have no idea what you are doing. theres alot of cool stuff on there.

a bus is a mixdown of audio track (s) within PT, without bouncing down all tracks (basically)
