Hi Guys,

How come when I open a new project, say regular rock template with bass/drums/guitar/organ, if I record onto the standard 'bass' channel, it sounds fine and everything, but when I mix it down to MP3 using the encoder that comes with Sonar 2, that channel, and often other channels, don't make it into the song???

Shawn:)

...Also, I'm out of PCI slots, and I don't want to lose the surround sound/Audigy 2 for DVDs etc., so for music, tomorrow I wanna buy the USB version of the Delta 2496 Audiophile.

Is that going to make a big difference for my music, especially real-time playing?

Does the same thing happen when you mix down to wave?

(And are you Shure you didn't mute the channel? :D)

Wave, seriously? Should I be doing that? Definitely haven't muted the channel LOL:(

Lemme get it straight: midi/audio tracks always go to A, B, C, or D, right?

Audio-tracks go to either VMain A, B, C or D (or that what you mean).
MIDI-tracks go to a MIDI-source.

Now we're getting somewhere, is a midi source a midi channel 1-16? If so, how is that related to the main outs (A, B, C, D)?

I've seen this explained in places, but not in simple terms.

You've got 128 midi channels, you've got 16 midi channels, you've got DXi's that have sometimes 4 channels, you've got 2 stereo out channels, what's the relationship?

Yes...

Well, only audio is sent to the VMains. MIDI is pr. definition not audio, it's just signals (as you shurely know). So for MIDI to be sent to the VMains, you either have to use a DXi or record the MIDI as audio.

:)

That explains why the VSC and Absynth demo, as well (I think) as the ReValver effect, are always in the mix.

The CRUX: So, on a straight midi track from the library of standard Sonar midi sounds (say a standard bass channel), how do I turn that into audio? I'm guessing you bounce, but how?

This is great, I'm learning a lot here, thanks moskus:)

ps I just dumped a tune down to .wav, and I may be crazy but it sounds a bit better (a little more expansive) than the mp3 dumps...

Standard Sonar MIDI-sounds? Sonar doesen't come with any sounds, they're probably from your soundcard... ;)

OK I'm daft. I'll try that when I get home. I'm getting the USB Audiophile tomorrow, and all Sonar/studio work will be routed to/from that from now on. Is that going to change my process except for drivers?

I'm keeping the Audigy 2 in there for DVD/surround/TV but the Audiophile 2496 USB for music, if that makes sense...and hooking the Audiophile into the line-in of my stereo for now, until I can get good powered monitors.

No, not really. But I would remove the Audigy from Sonar (deselect them in Options -> Audio -> Drivers) :)

That's my plan:)

OK I know this is the wrong place, but I just came across this: http://www.m-audio.com/products/m-audio/quattro.php

And it seems a good plan for me, since I don't have a mixer, and with this, it seems, I wouldn't need one.

But my concern is latency...does this one perform well for that? I don't know how to check for latency specs:(

I don't know, it didn't say it had WDM or ASIO-drivers. I'm not gonna read the manual to find out, but perhaps you should ;)
(You can get the manual at the website)

I just read a few posts from HRBBS, and it seems no one likes USB soundcards:(

I wonder if the *smartest* choice is to lose my DVD capabilities, and just but a good PCI card like the 2496/PCI?

I'll have to talk to the sales guys tomorrow night at my store.

You are Shure you can't rip out any of the other PCI-cards? Soundcards are best with PCI. I would only recommend USB to laptops (and even then PCMCIA would be the way to go)...

If the Audigy's Midi/Joystick card is PCI, that can go, but I'm at work so I don't remember.

My motherboard also has ethernet, but I'm using the external one from my ISP, so if that's PCI, I might be able to yank that if I can get drivers working...

Options, will check:)

Thanks moskus.

It's not a PCI card, it connects to the Audigy card. But it takes a PCI space, so let it go, and get the PCI version of the Audiophile! :)

OK so do I get the 2496, or the 44, they're both in my $ range...

Both seem to support ASIO and all the other fun stuff you like...

Rule number one: don't buy stuff when you don't know what you're doing untill you've heard the rap LOL.
