I have just purchased a new mic (SM58) and it is the first mic I own that I actualy care about keeping in decent shape. Anyway it's gotten me to thinking about things I have previously not worried about such as - Does it harm the mic to plug the cord into it when the other end of the cord is connected to a mixer with the power turned on? Should I plug the cord into the mic first and then the mixer, or does it not matter? Thanks - Paranoid new mic owner

You can plug the SM58 in however you like, cord connected or disconnected, mixer power on or off. However, you want to have your speaker volume down or off, as well as the mixers input gain for that channel low or off. This will prevent a possible speaker damaging 'pop' when you plug the mic in.

The Shure SM58 is a very rugged mike!

They used to advertise that you could drive nails with one! I have used some old ones that look like they were used as a hammer.

I have also seen them swung around overhead by the cable, and then tossed across the stage to another singer.

You wont regret your choice for a basic
Cardioid dynamic vocal mike. Later on you may want a large diaphram condenser microphone, and an omni-directional mic
to give you several options and textures.
