Hi folks - I'm fairly new to home recording and have been trying to learn cubase pretty much on my own, picking up bits and bobs from youtube videos, and threads here. Here's a mix of a backing track I've been working on this week, that I've tried to master myself (I've not really got a budget for a mastering house) using cubase native plugins. There's no vocals at the moment as I've not written lyrics or melody yet - I'm just really looking for advice/comments on the mix of the backing track - it's only about 3mins so if you can manage to listen all the way through that'd be great! Thanks in advance!

It's very quiet, but volume is not easy to acheive. I like the arrangement. I'm a guitarist and I think the parts are played well. Maybe more stereo separation would make it sound cleaner. Also, the synth needs to be louder. The drums are a little weak, but I struggle with those myself. All in all, it's a great start.

Thanks for your feedback. How would I go about making it louder? Is that using a limiter in the final mix, or compression or both? I've read a lot about compression killing the mix, loudness wars and other such things, but to be honest there are so many different opinions out there that I am a bit confused with it all. The drums I do find difficult, but I'm trying to get more practice building loops etc. Any other advice?

Yes levels need to be higher, I had my volume all the way up to hear it. That's easy to fix though. The drums need work, they sound disjointed, not mixed into the song, and a little robotic. How are you doing them? I have trouble with drums, so I try to use groove clips as much as possible. They are played by a real drummer and I don't have to reinvent the wheel. It really changes my method though. I find now I almost start with drums and work around them. Hey nobody said this was easy, but great potential. Keep tweaking and let us hear the the progress.

To quiet my man.... get the mix level up higher... you must have a master control somewhere in Cubase for your stereo mix?

I think your drum loop is out sync with the rest.

Sounds like it might be a nice toon, but I can't hear it well enough. Give us some more volume and you might get more useful feedback..
