Hi all, first post, but ive been lurking for a while. So ive been working with pro tools for a good ~2 years now on an mbox with my macbook pro and a decent collection of mics - at least i think so! - and it looks like this weekend i will take my first venture into recording a live performance. Some friends of mine are playing a small gig at a jazz club, theyre just jamming standards for the whole night very relaxed feel. They asked me if i wanted to try recording them and i said sure why the hell not, its a learning experience right?

so they consist of bass(thru an amp), keyboard(thru an amp) and an acoustic drum kit of average size (3 toms kick snare hi hat and 3-4 cymbals). My mics consists of 2 at3031's, a rode nt1a, 2 sm57's and an sm58. im running into an mbox2 and i have a pv6 mixer that ive used before to do drums(to great success i might add). What im looking for is recommendations on how to get all of these guys in the best way. mostly we were going back and forth on whether or not to mic the bass or DI it. im about 100% that im just running the keys straight to the mixer, the bass im not sure, and then i was thinking about either using 4 mics on the kit or maybe leaving a mic or two further back to pick up the whole band.

ive never recorded a live show before, this one will be pretty laid back and we will have time to mess around so its a good opportunity. any suggestions you guys could give would be great!

thanks!

You didn't get much of a response here, but how did your gig go? When I record a band, it seems to be either a board mix and an ambient mic or I'm all over the place trying to get a separate track for each instrument and vocal. It's always a headache. ...
