Newbie here needs advice

Hi all,

Just recently started doing research into home recording, but I am very very broke right now. Basically, I need someone to kindly tell me the bare minimum equipment needed for some home acoustic guitar and vocals recording! My friend is giving me Cubase for free, and have been told that all I really need is a little mixer and a microphone... can anyone elaborate or recommend some decent budget makes for this stuff? "Giving me Cubase for free" = pirating.

CubaseSE only costs $99. N-Track Studio is only $60. No excuse.

ehh, i dont really think thats pirating. my friends borrow me or give me video games, cds, etc. all the time..thats not really pirating. plus my dad has cakewalk and stuff that he lets me use. pirating is if you look for it online to download illegally...i think its ok to share or give things within a group of friends or family. dont tell me you never give things away or borrow things out, as long as the original product was paid for who cares. i give old computer games and cds to goodwill too sometimes, is that pirating? anyways, answer the mans question instead of yelling at him about piracy which is extremely boarderline in the first place.

i also heard all you need is a small mixer and a mic. i got a behringer ub802 mixer and a shure sm58 microphone, and its relatively silent...but ive been having problems with the digital sound. it sounds lifeless and stale but i have yet to find out why (i have been told its my soundcard). i have heard that its a pretty good basic setup. you might want to check out a shure sm57 instead if you intend to do multipurpose micing.

You'll need an audio interface to get the sound into your computer. Your existing soundcard will probably work as long as you have a "line-in" but it's not designed for pro audio. Take a look at www.m-audio.com, they have a comprehensive line of interfaces. Also, if you get an interface with preamps, you can probably lose the mixer too.

for accoustic guitar and vocals your probably best off with a large diaphram condensor, like a studioprojects b1 (£60 in the uk). I am in the same boat as you as i record with just me and an accoustic guitar, use a studio projects b1 through a m-audio audiobuddy preamp into my stock soundcard and i am pleased with the results

thanks for your help guys! I heard that you really dont want to be a cheapskate for a mixer and mic, how much money do you think im looking to spend here? Im asking mainly about the mixers, as they range from 40 to thousands! And seeing as I dont know what features etc i need its hard to know what price range im looking at. How complicated is it to hook it all up to the laptop, is that what the audio interface is for? Like I said... I have no clue, cheers again

It absolutely IS pirating. If you look at the license, it is for s SINGLE user on a SINGLE machine.

You can borrow a console video game because that is specifically allowed in the license. You cannot copy a PC video game because it has the same kind of license as DAW software. There is a fundamental difference here.

And as a saoftware developer, *I* care. It was paid for once, and used by multiple people. Go away.

No, because you are effectively giving up the license. If the donor continued to use the software, that is piracy.

That his friend gave it to him is as lame an excuse I have ever heard someone use for rationalizing piracy. It's still piracy.

I will continue to bitch as long as people think this is acceptable behavior.
