Ok. I just got some new equipment and I wanna learn how to use it and optimize what I get out of everything. Some of these questions may seem dumb to some of you more advanced recorders but I'm new to this and besides, you're the one reading forums in the newbie section. Ok the following is my equipment:
PC
Aardvark Q10
Behringer EuroRack MX550 2A (8 tracks)
MPX 500 Lexicon Effects Processor
Sonar Home Studio
Here is what I have gathered so far as to what I have to do to make all of this work well. For example I run 4 mics (drums) into the Aardvark. Then I run for example, a stereo reverb to the overheads by running the Lexicon into the first 2 inserts in the back of the Interface(which can be dialed into the headphone mix in cakewalk right?) Then I run 4 , 1/4" cables out of the 1-4 outputs behind the interface into inputs 1-4 on the mixer. Once they are in the mixer, my only use for these signals is for my own recording ease right? This has nothing to do with final mixdown but only for controlling prerecorded sounds while adding new tracks? Or is this mixer needed for any recording or mixdown purposes? This is where aux sends, outputs, inserts confuse me.
Both the aardvark and the behrenger have the same of the following:
Headphone Volume Knob
left and right 1/4" monitor outputs
Why do they both have these and which one should I be using ?
What are the advantages and disadvantages to a software mixer compared to a hardware mixer other than ease of use (being able to quickly move faders other than fumbling with a mouse)? Should mixdown be done in Cakewalk? If I were to instead, run these 4 mics out of the behrengers two 1/4" main mix outputs and run these into the first 2 in the aardvark, I would be degrading the signal right?
If anyone can find a way to clear things up for me that would be helpful. I think I'm right when I say that the Behringer mixer I have should only be used forplayback and controlling of already recorded tracks and should not be used to mixdown the final result.
Sorry if Im repeating myself, I probably am. and also I apologize if this post is poorly organized. I hope my confusion was well enough explained. Any help or links to tutorials would be appreciated. Are my understandings on track or am I way off?
