I'm looking for only the most basic functionality; I'm a "perpetual beginner" amateur guitar player, and I just want to be able to record a track or two to practice with, and to listen to my playing for the sake of improvement.

I do not intend to get heavily involved with the technology, which is difficult for me because I'm normally very inclined to do so. All I want to do is to either plug my guitar straight into the thing, or plug in the ouput of my Korg Pandora. I refuse to get any more elaborate than that (i.e. adding more equipment in-line to improve the tone, match levels, etc. etc.).

I planned to get the Porta 02 because (a) it's cheap and (b) it's small. Will what I have in mind work to any acceptable degree? I've read notes on the forums indicating that sometimes it's not necessarily that simple, and that the result can be very disappointing.

Do I need to go straight up to a 414 / 424, etc. or should the 02 meet my needs?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

If you're only using it as a scratchpad...

...and not for more serious work, it'll be fine!

I very much agree with Bruce,My wife and I bought one for my sister and I was impressed with how good it sounds.Really portable cool unit

little porta 02

It is also great for doing portable stereo or mono recordings. Just keep in mind it only has 1/4 inch inputs, so get some balanced 1/4-male xlr adaptors. good luck.
