Newb Student on a tight budget

He'res my thoughts on this... Behringer makes great paper weights but lousy audio gear as far as everything I have ever used from them...

I would try and dig around for a PreSonus Audio Box for USB or upgrade to firewire if you can afford that, you can find firepods for cheap these days which are great interfaces, I would say that getting better converters and lower latency will ALWAYS be better than stock sound cards and while I made plenty of recordings with a sound blaster live... The day I got good preamps and a decent converter in front of my signal chain was the day I could really "hear" my recordings.

Charles Dye who mixes a lot more hits than any of us on the board do, uses cheap Sony computer speakers for 60% of his mixing and the rest he uses NS-10 Yamaha speakers... Now tell me he can't make great mixes, and then tell me he is doing it on amazing wonderful hifi speakers that totally rock....

While I did hear a lot more details with speakers that don't suck I think that getting a decent I/O and some detailed mics in the chain early will give a lot less problems to fix later as needed. Another thing you guys can also debate about is which should he fix first the ROOM or the mics because the ROOM will be the final factor no matter WHAT gear is used for the studio.

I appreciate your help guitar_junkie but it looks as if USB might be the easier option considering I've never done anything like this before, and I'm sure once I'd become more experienced I could move to a more advanced setup, but I'd love to start out simple at present.

Apologies for the double post, but I've decided to go with:

Peavey PV8 Mixer
Audiophile 2496
T.Bone Sc400
Behringer X8500

Are what I've decided on, hopefully you'll hear some decent quality sound coming soon! I'll still need some help with which monitors to choose, I literally only want some simple beginner monitors that can be found cheaply on dv247.com (Thanks KrispyDK!) that can be connected to the pv8 as the only cheap ones I've found either have RCA input or 1/8 inch connectors.

Cheers again, Kris

There's nothing wrong with the behringer mixer you chose man don't listen to the hype. The new xynyx range are great behringer have changed and i still use my ol skool behringer mixer live all the time.. You get the us sound card saving you money to invest in monitors or a stand alone preamp in the future if you want to improve on the behringer pre's but for what you want it'll be fine..
The size of these posts is amazing why over complicate everything

Sorry for the necropost, mics have now been purchased, just procrastinating on the mixer(s) now, Disease8, you reccomend getting the Behringer XENYX Mixers then as opposed to the Peavey and the audiophile card? (Should work out cheaper too)

'why dont you try and get both a dymanmic and a condencer, so you can begin to work on the differences of them. then instrad of having 2 of the same mics you could have 2 different ones meaning you can get loads more veriety in your work.

For the people fighting against input or output. Have you realised he is a student, Like myself. And is most likly doing everything in one room. And as most people know who do this, It is very hard to listen to what everything sounds like on monitors with out hearing what your playing. It seems a little redundant. plus he's new to this. Ive been doing this a few years now and Im still at the stage where im exited to have recorded a noise reguardless of how it sounds. . .:D:D

Thanks benherron! I'm glad someone understands my dilemma!

I understand you're new to this, but maybe you could help ben, do you think the xenyx would be more than adequate for what I want it for? Or would you say the peavey is a must?

Cheers, Kris
