I have a few questions,Im 13 and gonna get a guitar soon and want to start a band so i was wonderin if you need a computer for mixing and all the recording stuff ive been lookin around on here a lot and on other websites so I know a lot of stuff Thanx :)

Welcome to the board! Man, if you are just buying your first guitar then I would start there. It should be a while before you are ready to record or play with a band. Find someone you know who plays guitar and get them to teach you a few things. It a long, FUN road to where you are going just take it one step at a time. To answer your question- no you do not need a computer, but you will need something to record on, but learn how to play first. Feel free to stop in here and ask questions whenever you need.

thanx a lot Im thinkin I of teachin myself im not sure though oh and one more question what the cheapest studio setup just out of curiosty

I agree a small four track (to cassette) costs about $99 (not counting mics, cords, headphones, etc). Both Fostex & Tascam have low cost 4 tracks.

Don't be in too much of a hurry to record. Learn to be a musician first. Regarding teaching yourself (I assume you mean on guitar)- try to get some lessons sooner rather than later.

While many people are self taught, most eventually try to get some formal education and often wish they would have recieved lessons sooner. It is very easy to learn bad habits and bad technique - and it is very hard to unlearn it.

I am basically self taught on several instruments (guitar, bass, drums, keys, violin, banjo0, harmonica, voice) but when I have had lessons, I always found there were things I was doing poorly. It was often difficult to correct (after teaching myself the wrong way) but once corrected, my playing always improved.

Once you start to learn a little on guitar - find people to play with. Interacting with other musicians (in particular better musicians) is a great way to improve as a player!!!!

thanxs a lot guys for the feedback I just got back from goin to two guitar stores that are right next to each other. Im thinkin about getting a squier package guitar set with everything in it for 200. I also saw my neighbor there he's fifteen and worked at a school all year to get money and was buying a huge amp and a guitar

ahh, the strat pack....

I got a squier strat pack for Christmas when I was around 15. I loved it! My first real guitar. Anyway, I agree with Mikeh on some things but if you want to learn all you need to do is watch the video that comes with it and get a chord book. Yes lessons will help you learn proper technique but they are not the way for everyone. Just learn how to play guitar the way you like best. Definately try lessons, but if you are not enjoying playing then try a different method. I always hated lessons. Also, try and get a guitar teacher who plays with you more than teaches. The best teachers I have ever had are just people I jammed with. You learn more by playing than watching and reading.
Good Luck and have fun! Let me know when you drop your first record

johnhall5445,

I agree that finding the right teacher is important. Certainly, just staring out, a video and a chord book can be enough to learn some chords and get some instant gratification - but it is so easy to learn bad habits and so hard to unlearn.

I agree the best teachers play with you, teach certain techniques, etc and allow you to have fun - rather than force you to play a scale, etc.

I've never much liked lessons - I normally find someone that can teach me specific things and may only take one lesson - one maybe come back in a month to take a second lesson (as an example, I had a "teacher" show me how to tap, work on it for a few weeks and then come back to have the teacher make small small corrections). Two lessons was all I needed (on that subject).

Many years ago, I asked a keyboard instructor to teacher me some basic theory (circle of 5ths/4ths, etc) - a couple of lessons was all I needed, then I was able to woodshed.

But I still think it's better to do those thing early, before the bad habits get started!
