Howdy!

I've got a new upbeat tune. This is kind of a departure for me seeing as how i typically have slow depressing ones. I'm not sure if i'm sticking with this arrangement, but let me know what you think. Just to give you a heads up, it's acoustic guitar, conga sort of thing...There are a couple funky notes here and there, and I might be peaking on the main voice in a couple spots, but you get the idea...

Song Title: Talkin' Smack

Do you like it? Not like it? Add things? Subtract things?

Thanks!

My $.02

I like the tune. Good energy in the guitar and vocals. I'm pretty new to the mixing end of things, so no useful comments for you there.

As a percussionist, I'd kinda liked to of heard 2 and 4 a little more on the Congas. The sound I'd use is the POP you get by muting the head with a cupped hand and slapping the edge of the head with just my index finger (hurts less with tape). Try it out, you might like it.

I like the use of the Shaker (shekere'), but it kinda varies off of the beat in some spots. I think it could add a lot more to the peice if it was played a little snappier (maybe harder, and further away from the mike) to really nail the 16 notes. It's a tough and tiring instrument to play, but at least there are rest breaks in this tune (btw- I like instrumental the rests- nice musical touch). Then again, you might like the looser sound too. Just my oppinion.

Fun song!

Thanks Coloradojay!

I'll give that conga thing a shot...and I was planning on cleaning up the shaker along with a few other things where they slightly stray from the path, but I don't want it too mechanical sounding...thanks!

Any other feed back?

Yeah- not exact, equal sounding, sixteenths, there should be some funky accenting and/or synchopation there, just more on time and a little less slushy. I think you got the point.

Jam on!

that's it? one comment? come on...rip me or something...

Hey Robertt8,

Cool and catchy tune!!

I like the vocals on a voice, inflection and production front........Nice.

IMHO......
Give this sucker a full D-kit with a bumpin' kick and rattle free snare.

I think the bassline could be attacked more appropriatlly with a bouncy, higher end e.q. and some fuller runs.

Build the rhythm git up with more of a tight wall of sound of both stereo sides.

Again, IMHO.

Great song, I like the energy and vocal delivery. I'd just do more to flesh it out.

Cool listen for me

Peace,
Theron.

EQ problems?

Theron: Thanks for the input. I was thinking about doing a full drum kit on this tune, where maybe it would kick in on the first chorus or something. Does it seem like the bass isn't loud enough? or is it just me? I think I need to re-cut the vocals again, so I don't need to double it up. I'm pretty sure I was peaking in a few spots too.

Also, how does the EQ sound to people? I'm using the Studio Projects B1, and it seems to be maybe a little hi on all the mic-ings...like there's not much bass coming through. What do you guys think?

Greeting's Robertt8,
I'm just a newbie, so take my opinion for what it's worth.
The song is good and the vocal's really stand out in a good way. I notice it didn't have a lot of bottom end like you said but wasn't too bad though. I checked out your other tune's and they did have more bass to them. Did you use the B1 on those other tune's?

BTW, what is your signal chain for the acoustic as it sounded very good to me?
C Ya.............Joe :D

Thanks

Joe Recorder: Thanks for the input. I've redone the tune with more bass and EQed the guitars a bit to help separate them. I can't repost until Tuesday, but I might have some drums in there by then.

Most of those tunes we're done with a mix of MXL 990, Shure SM58 and Studio Projects B1. This song was all B1 though. As for the chain, I've been basically mic-ing into either the mxl 990 and or Studio Projects B1 and running it into the Audio Buddy for pre-amp and then straight into the Roland VS-880EX. Pretty simple...no flash. I've noticed the more crap I put on to it, the more funky it sounds.

Thanks, I'll try and post the update Tuesday...

I like this one a lot. I've been listening to it over the weekend (burned it onto a cd with some other HomeRec stuff). I like how the shakers (maracas?) come in on the 2nd verse...really kicks it into high gear.

Great job!
