Hi, first time posting here. Been lurking here for awhile and listening to all the great tunes, so I thought I'd finally post something and see what people think of it. The songs called 'One Way Trip'. No singing yet, since the singers computer isn't working at the moment... we live about 60 miles apart, so we work over the net, otherwise he could come here and record it. anyway, heres the link...

nobody listened to it? damn, I see other posts that get responses in less than 5 minutes.... come on.... hehe, it's not that bad... and if it is.. just tell me and I'll fix it hehe.

Decent song, and a decent recording.

Not sure about the piano part, where it keeps nearly stopping but not quite (edit - this only is noticable near the begining). Not sure if that was intentional or not. The tone on the bass is really nice. Ditto for the guitar that come in a little after 2 min. On second thought that guitar is a little harsh sounding (maybe EQ out some midrange).

It's pretty long for an instrumental. While it's by and large well played, there's not enough new things going on to keep up listener interest. I shut it off well before the end.

Very good tune headband.
:)
What did you record this on? What kind of piano?
Looking forward to the vocals put on it.

Nice song!
Reminds me of John Lennon's stuff.
Piano playing and tone are very nice!

I like the production, the instruments come in just right.
The only thing sounds like it needs a little work is the bass.
Not punchy enough, and a little out of tune with the piano I think.
JMHOP!:D

Great guitar playing,nice tone.
Is it DI'd?
On your Nowhere site you said it was just a filler,I'd definitly work it in,sounds really good.

Very enjoyable,thanks.

Pete

hehe, wow, finally, some relpies.... ok...

Trip: thanks for the listen... yeah, actually that guitar tone was supposed to be for a rythym on another song... I had a few that night and laid down the geetar, got the wrong tone... sorry hehe. But, the guitar isn't goin to be stayin once we get the singin done, so when we do get to that, I'll make a note not to get the mids to high. thanks for the info. Oh yeah, hehe, that piano part... umm... it's supposed to do that... but if you think it shouldn't?

Joe: as far as recording goes... well, I'm on much more of a limited budget compared to you guys... so I just do it in software... piano is just midi... recorded with an old POS casio... and cakewalks music creator... but... to get the sound I use virtual sound canvas... same with the drums, I did play them, but I used a yamaha dd50, and used the midi off it, then used vsc to process the sounds.

also, when we do the vocals... we actually do use a real singer hehe.

muze: well, I'm flattered you thought of john.... but sorry, when it's done it will sound nothing like him...well, not with the way the singin is going to go. And definately, I noticed the bass out of tune too on a couple parts... hehe, funny thing is, I recorded it like 39 times the first nite I came up with that line, and only played it right that one time.... so I'll likely try to redo it.
heheh, oh, and what's DI'd?
I know nobody asked, but I use revalver for guitar... along with a real sh*tty washburn

I made the presets myself it that helps any hehe, (yeah, I know, but I don't have a really good amp to mic)

I think I covered everything... if not lemme know hehe

and again, thanks all for the comments, especially trip for bein the first hehe

Welcome to the board headband. This is nice, a mellow Elton Johm meets Pink Floyd IMO. Recording sounds great, everything's clear, the drums are sounding good. Can't wait for lyrics :D

You should hang out, post some stuff in some forums, even the cave, and listen and respond to others' music. I think you'll get a better response here in the clinic. Maybe I'm a little too political, but it's worked for me ;) :)

This is gonna' be an ambitious tune...it's over 7 minutes long, and I'm not hearing a chorus of any kind. Don't take that as a slam at all, I just really wanna' hear what the singer does with this.

You'll repost it when its got vox, right? (btw..."DI'd" means...well, it's the verb form of "DIRECT INPUT,"...so, directly inputed, I guess. Lol.

The only "mix" type comment I have is that the overall volume seems pretty low...and I may be nuts about that.

Okay, good luck with this, and repost.

umm...nevermind whatever I said about the volume...just found the "volume" knob on my computer, and that did WONDERS.

sorry

You've definitely got some guitar chops. I actually recognized that Revalver sound. I have that plug-in as well.. definitely go for a different tone... that rectified sound just doesn't fit. I did like the playing though. Just to be a nit picky bastard, some of the bends were a tad bit flat.

The piano performance didn't do it for me at all. I'm guessing your casio doesn't have any aftertouch or whatever they call it... it seemed pretty static and programmed. However, I did like the arrangement. I have the same problem with my piano tracks because I step-record everything or import ascii tab files and convert them to midi...

I dug the bass tone. It meshed with the piano and the flavor of the tune.

I won't really comment on the drum sounds. I'm the kinda guy that loves real drums or at least decent samples. On the flip side, if electronic drums/midi is used, I like electric sounds and not electric trying to be acoustic sounds... but that's all a matter of personal preference. The drum performance was pretty decent. Some timing issues here and there... did you quantize? Anywho...

I'd love to hear a version with vocals.

this sure needs some vocals, but if you can't get any I'd suggest you'd shorten the song. The snare could use some reverb (now this is becoming my motto :D I'm a moron, I know) I know there's some, but it could have more of it, I guess. But don't take my word for it, since I'm a moron. The drums are obviously midi, but the sounds ain't bad. The playing (or programming?) just sounds stiff, or maybe these particular drum sounds are too powerful for this kind of song.

Hey, I just noticed this song seems to only have this one chord progression. I only noticed it at about five minutes. Damn, I've got to be a moron. Well, I guess the solos are so good that the fact slipped by me. I dunno. I just like the solos. This really should have some vocals, as I said earlier, or make it shorter. But still, some nice soloing. The whole chord progression sounds a bit like the Twin Peaks theme.

Did I hear some kind of fart towards the end of it? :D

Hehe, cool, now I know what DI'd is. As far as the chorus goes, well, it used to be different than the rest of the song... well, the whole song used to be different hehe, but the singer (I really shouldn't just call him a singer... he writes the music and is a way better guitar player than I am) changed the music because he thought it was too 'happy' sounding.

So this is what we ended up with, and oddly enough, I'm quite curious to see how he's gonna sing it too hehe. I can post the old version of it somewhere probably if you really wanna hear it, but I must warn you, it's a really bad recording(that I had nothing to do with hehe, it was just him).

As far as this version goes though, so far I'm the only one thats done anything with it, since his comp ain't working right. Basically, he called me and played a little bit of it, and then I recorded it, pretty much just goin off the 4 chords I heard playin hehe. When he gets his comp workin right, hopefully he'll redo the solo too.

chrisharris : lol, yeah, those volume knobs are kinda nice sometimes eh? hehe, especially if you wanna turn something down. Seriously though, it was pushin out just under zero in cool edit on the meters... if that needs adjusting lemme know. hehe, or was it really just your volume knob?

JR#97 : yeah, your right, no aftertouch, no key sensitivity, or any bells or whistles, just a POS old keyboard. But it had midi out on it hehe, I got it by trading an old 133mhz comp for it, if that tells ya what it's worth. I'm really not a very good piano player, so, if something sounded off, it probably was.

Glad you liked the bass... but of course like everything else it was played on substandard equipment... some POS peavey bass guitar, hmm, got it sittin next to me, don't see a model # or anything, but it says fury right under peavey. needs new strings hehe. Oh yeah, you said you have revalver, thats what I used on the bass too, if you want the preset, lemme know(probably not lol).

Drums... well, hehe, I'm not a drummer. I definately appreciate real drums too, but the set we have is so shitty, even if we had the mics for it, it'd still sound like cardboard boxes. So I figured just for recording, this thing would do the trick, so I bought it.

CrankyOne : Twin Peaks? hmmm, gotta get that one, it must be cool hehe. ;)

Did I hear some kind of fart towards the end of it?

hehe, yeah. Well, I gotta edit that out, it was actually just a bad cord hehe... really...

wow

This is me like 10 years ago head. I love the melodic piano piece and the guitar sounds really cool over it, exactly how I would have done it, right down to the toggel switch riff ;). I have a question for ya do you use pedels for the guitar or what? Why not run the keyboard thru your guitar processor just for a little reverb, I used to do it all the time. Not for nothing, I listened to your Jovi remake and thought, why not use that same piano walk for your song?

hehehe, the toggle switch riff, didn't know it had a name. Yeah, it's been done to death, but I had to cheat, my pickup switch makes too much noise, so I just used my fingers to fake it.... although I'm sure you could tell, but thought I'd say so just in case hehe.

10 years ago? hehe, well, now don't you feel old? hehe. Yeah, me 10 years ago was recording on a 4 track, and gettin shit for results, then again, me just figurin out how to record on a computer was just last year.

I use no pedals for the guitar, just plug it straight into my cheap ass sound card, and let revalver do the rest (not a plug for whoever makes revalver hehe).

as far as runnin the keys through reverb... well, I can only get decent sounds through midi/vsc.... so that leaves that option out.

And, well, "that piano walk" .... umm, well I'm just not sure what your saying?

anyway, thanks for the listen.

head.

Kind of a hypnotic tune. Nice playing throughout. My biggest feedback may be the drum sound. IMHOP -- I didn't think the actual drum sound worked for this tune, and they seemed to be mixed kind of too far back -- of course this is strickly preference --

Will be interesting to see where this tune goes as soon as the vocals are on it. It is a bit long in its current state and there are not many changes.

Real nice guitar playing on there.

Thanks for the listen :)
