oh, also do I hear a little Linkin Park in the song "Complete" maybe an influence.

Thanks for the comments. A lot of people have commented about the guitar tone (thanks to all), so let me offer a little more input...

I'm not sure if I'm really doing anything special with the POD, though I'm definitely not using a preset. I sat down with some of my favorite CDs and found sections where the guitar was by itself. I recorded those sections as a bunch of little clips and then sat down with the POD and tried to get as close as I could to each tone (make sure you run everything through the same set of speakers/headphones for a stable reference point). When I dialed things in as close as I could get them, I ended up with tones I probably wouldn't have picked otherwise, but they ended up sounding great in the mix...

And yes, mulitple parts are a big part of the sound. I have at least 3 rhythm guitars going at all times (and will go up to five for bigger sections). Also, I mix tones. Of the three always going, Tone A is right up the middle. Tone B, which is in the same style but definitiely different, is panned hard right, and Tone C (again, heavy but different) is hard left. When I have 5 going, it's still A up the middle but B and C are both panned hard on each side.

Hope that helps. When I get the time, I'd like to post my tone(s) at the Line 6 user site for other people to benefit from them. If and when I find the time to do it, I'll post here and let eveyone know...

brokenwindow -- we're still (read: always) working on the drums. Since it's a drum machine, if we EQ or compress one thing, we do it to the whole kit (cymbals and all). I don't know enough about it, but I don't think there's a way to EQ or compress that would benefit the entire kit. Let me know if you have specific suggestions -- we're always up to try something new to improve the drums...

and sondriven -- we definitely dig Linkin Park and are glad you can hear it (though "complete" was actually written quite a few years ago, prior to the big LP breakthrough). In terms of Job, I just finished spouting off on the ever-popular 'does christian music scare people...' thread, so I'm not really up for a discussion. Suffice it to say I respect and appreciate your opinion, but I don't really agree or see things quite the same...

Thanks again to all and please feel free to keep the suggestions and/or questions coming...

M-L-S,

Im not really up for a discussion too, but thats really cool that the song complete was written before Linkin Park. Anyway keep up the good work.

Could you check out one of my mixes. Its at www.javamusic.com/sondriven

"Song for the unborn (final mix)

I would like to get your input on how its mixed. I tried to make the song heavy, was wondering if it was.

Hey, sondriven. I took a listen to your song but can only tell so much from the streaming file and I haven't joined javamusic, so I couldn't download -- Do you like javamusic? Are they worth joining? Any advantages over mp3.com? Give me the scoop...

Anyway, from the streaming audio version, the mix seems pretty good. The vocals could be higher in the mix -- the verses are hard to comprehend. When it kicks into the chorus it's very dynamic -- almost too much. You won't hear me say that often cause I love dynamics, but I turned it up to try and understand the verse vocals and had to jump on the volume and crank it down when it kicked in...

Personally, I think the two 'bomb drops' at about 2:34 took away from the rhythmic consistency of the tune, but I liked the instrumental break right after that (before the chorus) and I also liked the vocal variation over the musical chorus towards the end.

I think the guitars seem pretty heavy, but some palm muting and a more rhythmic guitar part might make it seem heavier (though I may be biased towards palm muting and syncopation) ;-)>

Overall, it sounded good through the stream and I'm sure the hi-fi is even better... If I end up joining javamusic (or you convince me to join), I'll download the tune and let you know how the hi-fi version comes across. Lata!

J,

Wierd, I keep running into you at different threads, you'll probably get a post from me on another place...anyway about javamusic.com

Its actually pretty cool, I only joined because I can post mp3's immediately and dont have to wait 10 days for a file to post (mp3.com). They give you about a full day to be on the cover of their homepage (fresh grounds) for some exposure. Its not much but every little bit counts. I did not know that if you are a non-member you cant download the songs, that might be the only drawback. But its free.

And about my song, I agree that it is a little to dynamic in the shifting from Verse to Chorus, but dont know how to knock it down. And after the second Chorus I used the "bomb drop" sounds as a tool to move the song in another direction then going into the synth thing then chorus, is there something else that could be put there?

And finally, I think my vocals suck, I can barely sing so I did a spoken word thing for the verses (which are suppost to be sung) and I used a lot of distortion on the Chorus vocals (which I like to do)

I posted a thread about vocals in the "recording techiques" if you care to help me with that one.

Thanks for the time you took to sift my song out, greatly appreciated. And let me know when you post a new song.
