New tune from me...

It's not all that new, actually... It's about half a year old. But I kinda like it. The idea was that we were going to do a commercial song. Didn't work out, but it is pretty funny.

There's some really nice solo's towards the end. Me on wurly, a small part on guitar, followed by one of me hommies on guitar.

Comments on everything please. Like to hear what you think.

Oh, forgot: it's the second song, Groovin' low ... the other song has been there for a while, good listen too if you like this one.

I am going to listen again loud tomorrow, but this were my thoughts on the first listen.

The instruments sound real balanced.
The room is real and present and convincing. Maybe too convincing. I wanted a bigger room.

When the vocals came in, that was the AHA moment. Very clean, sweet, pro vocal sound.

How did you get that sound?

It's mostly done on sequencer (yamaha QY70) and sampler(A3000). I don't remember what part comes from which thingy. Then there's one synth line played live coming from the JV1010, and a funky guitarlick played live...

The vocals are reocrded with a C3000B thru the symetrix e528.

All effects and mixing was done on a VS1880...

I'm not really good with reverbs. Never played alot with it. I don't really like the reverbs in the VS1880 either.

Damn. I can never get the streaming thing to work. Bummer the download option isn't available. However, then everyone would store Roel's tunes and he would never be able to reap his massive roalties from sales. ;)

Interesting tune. Lotsa keys. At first the drum machine seemed monotonous, then it kinda grew on me, but by the end, it was back to a bit monotonous. Then again, these crappy speakers might just make it seem that way. You might try adding some additional variation to the kick and snare along with the obligatory fills that you already have.

The key and guitar solos were refreshing after hearing what sounded like a lot of programming.

Overall, great job! :)
 
Agree that the drums get slightly repetitive, love the congos however, overall a really cool tune.

Yeah, guess the drums are somewhat repetive. But I guess this is also because of the waaaay long solo's at the end, which make the song twice as long. But it's something to remember for the next tune...

There's alot of programming involved, but it's not all programmed... The funky guitarriff over the verse, and the synth with octave-bends are played live. (well, cut and paste for the guitarriff.)

Alot of cutting/pasting here. The chorus is just one take, and copied, (if I remember correctly). Also, originally there was no chorus in between the 2 solo's. But that was a bit over the top. So we just pasted the chorus in between. Gotta love those workstation-tricks... :)

I looove being able to quickly fix a botched chorus or riff by copying the same riff from another part of a tune. Makes me feel like a pro fixing the mistakes of sub-par musicians in the old days. ;)
 
I do have to say that the singer is awesome. Almost everything we do these days is in 1 or 2 takes! Mostly it's not worth the hassle of looking where to cut, just a new take or quick punch in, less trouble, and much faster, and it's gonna be right the next take anyway!
 
Great job Roel, I especially liked the piano part in about the middle of the song. I didn't think about the Freddie Mercury angle until someone mentioned it, and then the beat did remind me of "Another One Bites The Dust". That's cool, I am a big Queen fan.

Nice all, pure synth intro....I like it.
The vocals are well performed too...fit the music nicely.
stereo congas...I can dig it.
I like how things are slowly added/layered to build the song.
nice riff at 1:51.
At 2:25...things are still good to listen too...new stuff (vocals) still being added....I like that.
At 3:00...I was ready for a solo...some tasty licks. I'd loose the *sitar*...or whatever. Also the low left hand chordal stuff is a tad too loud VS the right hand soloing. I realize this may be a *do it for yourself* type recording as the soloing *MIGHT* get a little long.
To condense the song (if desired), I might add the gtr solo(s) ON TOP of the wurly after a min. or so of the keyboard solo...and then just fade the whole shootin match out after 30 secs of so ...
Nice fidelity, blend, etc. (I excuse the HH, cause I use the same brand a lot too!)
 
Yeah, chordal stuff... I'm not really good at that. In fact, me and my companion like it both, so he was saying -while tracking- 'com'on men, use yer left hand!'... So I did. Sound pretty ok, but a little loud maybe.

We left the solo's this way since we like them. And we really did this song for ourselves.

The sitar. Well, I don't know. Without it, it's really kinda empty. I didn't liked it that much either at the start. Other dude put it in. If we'd leave it out, there really has to be something else to replace it.

The intro is not purely synth... The drums are sampled with a filter over it. :p But it's close...

And the baseball cap. :D Well... :rolleyes: Maybe you'll just NEVR know. :D

I like the vocals. My only complaint is that I really don't see how the intro to Groovin Low fits. If I just heard the intro and none of the rest of the song I would expect the song to be a latin type thing like Vengaboys or something. Then when the actual song comes in it is this kind of 80's sounding song with no latin influebce throughout the rest of the song. I also think the song would be better served with a different section that cam in or something. I get a little tired of that bass sound. I know you change what it does for the solo breaks, but I think it should have been changed more. Maybe include a latin breakdown section or something. Then the intro would make a little more sense. Just some ideas, its really not a bad song, I just think it could be a little more varied.

Yeah. I also think it could use more variation. But it's just a sequencer-type song, and we don't like to put too much effort in it. Maybe if we have more songs for the project, we will call in a real drummer to groove it up, and add real bass.
Don't have the time to really finish the song. This actually started as a try to see if we could make a commercial kinda song. Once we got into it we just did our thing with it.

We had one more song comming up, but quit that half a year ago because of onther projects taking our time... That one was pretty funny too: the 'graveyard groove'. hehe. Cheesy organ all the way, harpsichord, discoguitars, funky rhodes on the background. Had everything.... Couldn't find a bassline though. Even had a bassplayer come over, but he sucked. All the techniques, slapping, tapping, but no musical feeling... The type that plays bass, but doesn't realize what playing bass really is.
