Hey yall,

I've been working on a song all this week and just finished it thursday night. I've been told it sounds radio-friendly by my buddy and the 3 people that have heard it seem to enjoy it. It kinda reminds me of weezer a little bit, but I'll let you guys be the judge of that. Any feedback is appreciated. This song definately isn't something for everyone, but I had an older version of this song that I did over a year ago and this version is lightyears better in my opinion. It sounds tighter, the beat is constructed better and the vocals, while not perfect, are listenable (ha, is that even a word?). Let me know what yall think! The song is called Vacation. You can download it from here:

MOOPLA @ www.bandlookup.com

Just click on the red down arrow next to the song title to download it.

I'm using this song and one other song to send in to a local radio station for an "on-air battle of the bands." Basically 10 finalists are selected from all entries and then played on the local show May 1st and then the listeners call in and choose what songs make it to the final round. After a winner is picked you get to be interviewed on air by the station, your song goes into rotation :D and then you get to headline your own set of shows in the area  ! For more information or just to tune into the station online (theyre a great station, no commercials and they play a huge variety of music that I've ever heard!) go over to 90.5 FM - WBER .

Thanks for your time,

:p :p :p O.K., this is pretty bad. I'll give you credit for a creative arrangement, but I hope your friends were kidding about the "radio friendly" comments. The vocal is not even close, pitchwise, and the canned drums are...well...not pleasant. Good luck with the BOTB, though. :D

damn, i didn't think it was that bad. i guess i should just quit while i'm ahead

cool tune.......if I had a station or if I had a good station to listen to, this would be playin. I'm puttin it in my "I like it" folder. it is a little boomy at times though. I like the fucked up vocals, the sharp ass guitar, distorted bass/synth....whichever it is. Are your friends deaf? I don't hear any Weezer here.

discreetly give everyone the finger, bout to blow my woofer outa the box :D

I like your synth stuff although I don't like pure electronic music.

scratch my remark about no Weezer influence, your friends are'nt deaf, I am. I do hear it after listening thru a couple of times. I hear alot of Pavement too. I like this tune alot........guess you know that by my number of posts. :D

oh fuck I forgot..........SCRUBS you suck if you think this tune sucks. you should open your ears man and leave the mainstream pop sound for the rest of the girly boys to work on. matter a fact, I don't want to be rude, and I apologize because I know I have been already, I think you could really get going with your own music after you open your ears.

ha ha! fuck man this tune rocks! the louder the better!

Thanks for your input, Travis. I obviously have a lot to learn about experimental music and, since you're such an expert, why don't you get me up to speed? Please, please tell me about all the great music that I must be missing because I cannot "open up my ears." Oh, wait, if Pavement is your idea of experimental, don't waste your time. I was probably getting stoned to Pavement records while you were still in diapers.

Just to clarify, I never said the song was bad...in fact, I gave him props for an inventive arrangement. However, the fact that his vocal lacks any sense of melody or key makes this tune rather unlistenable to me. Also, since this is a mixing clinic, this mix is pretty much a cluster. The levels are completely out of whack, regardless of the style. If that's your thing, fine. Not everyone will agree on what's good. I can recommend a good audiologist for you, though, because I think it's time to get your ears checked.

Ok, I knew it was comin.......

Unless my eyes are on the blink, you said it's pretty bad. You may have been getting stoned to Pavement when I was in diapers. So what? You obviously did'nt "hear" anything they did. And no, they are'nt my idea of experimental music. Neither is this the tune in question.

My eyes are'nt too good, my ears are'nt too good either. But, I can still read and I can still hear and I can definitely feel this tune.

You can take what I said however you want but know this......I can hear you struggling with your music. Trying to make it sound like this or that. I don't think you probably sound anything like yourself at all because you're trying to play for others first and yourself second.

Here's a little experiment for you. Plug in a mic, hit record, and sit in front of it with a guitar. Just play for a few minutes and let whatever comes out, come out. Listen back. Do you like what you hear?

A line in the sand has been drawn...

and I'm taking a postion, fer sure.

I think the vocalist has a very cool style, but should try to be more off-key, so people don't make the mistake scrubs made. The lead guitar is the tip-off. It was never meant to please the ears in the harmonic sense.

I like the effort and writing, but I'd hate to be on Travis' side of any argument.

Thanks for the psychoanalysis. You certainly know all about me.

I don't know what your beef is with me or my music, but it is completely irrelevant to this dude's song. He posted it here in the mixing clinic for critique. I gave my critique, which contained constructive comments on the mix and performance, which I felt needed improvement. Again, this has nothing to do with my music. Why you feel the need to make a personal attack against me is beyond my comprehension. If you don't think I know what I'm talking about in my reviews, feel free to skip right over them or place me on your ignore list. We are all just offering opinions here and trying to improve our music.

actually, I must apologize both for fuckin up this thread and for being rude to you scrubs but after hearing this tune, and going back and reading your original post, I was very pissed. I almost did'nt listen to the tune after reading your post for the first time. I'm glad I did though and I am still pissed that you said "it's pretty bad". I would'nt listen to a mainstream tune and write in my review "this is pretty bad" just because I don't like the style. Maybe Digitalsmigital is right, you just got confused by the crazy vocal, which to me really is'nt that crazy, just pretty cool. again I apologize for any personal remarks.

and to Digitalsmigital, why would you not want to be on my side of an argument? was I that harsh?

No, or, maybe...

I think we both are having one of those days, and should take each other's remarks with a grain of salt. :D

Then again, I may be too much asshole for anyone.

OK guys, lets all calm down before I go stand in the corner and count to 10. Wait!!! I can't count that high. Damn, we're all screwed. Now let's get on with the music.

Vocals are different. Actually, the song is different. Weezer meets Duppie Bubble. Cool in a quirky way. I agree the levels need some work. Some stuff is real loud, some too quiet. This can be fixed. Slightly tighter mix, and it would be quite a nifty party tune.

Thanks for all the opinions, I can see now that more than 1 person was actually listening (haha). A litte more info, this was all recorded on my fostex mr8 digital audio recorder with a couple of sm57's and 58's. The fostex has no eq, and no onboard mixer and I don't have any outboard fx so I had to adjust the levels listening to the raw mix thru my monitors. What you're listening to is what I thought would be the best mix. It's far from perfect, but I thought it was "listenable."

Thanks for all the feedback. I shall remove my hand from the sand.
