I just got a portico and big ben.
I definetly hear an improvement on my end.
What do you think?

This is just guits and drums, no bass etc...yet.

Mesa dbl rec/Jcm900 lead4x12/Royer121 and 57 to Portico/421 to avalon(no amplitube, no cpmression, no eq)

Drums werent done with the new gear, they were pre existing.

Just a couple opinins will do thanks a bunch.

Nice tone. I actually heard something with a similar tone this last weekend. Can't remember who. Sweet playing also. I like the riffs. But the tone is great, in my opinion.

Guitars sound great on my end. Would be interesting to hear this in the context of a "Full" mix. Is this from your progressive band? The riffing is really cool in places.

I'd also love to hear this in context... Gawddayum, your drummer is a fooking MONSTER. Really crisp, clean, and defined guitar. (for a heavily distorted guitar, that is... :) ) It's a fine, warm, "analog" sounding tone. I can almost feel the glow of tubes. :)

Nice playing. I like the guitar sound. How the heck do you and your drummer keep it up for 4.5 minutes. I mean I can do fast stuff like this for 5 seconds but that's it. :) Nice playing. :)

Ditto - fabulous playing - both drums and guitar. And sweet tones - you won't get out of a Behringer ;)

Now I have a severe case of gear envy :(

.... and playing envy

Your guitar tone reminds me of Black Sabbath on the Master of Reality album. That song sounds really familiar. Did you post an earlier version of it?

Just going to say that...guitar tone fucking rules, man. Beautiful! :)

Which Avalon you using?

Thanks Seeker.
The Avalon is the vt737.

The mojority of what youre hearing is the 421/737 combo.

The other mics/pres just fill out the low mids.

WOW!

The riffs are ABSOLUTELY...AMAZING.

I QUIT........wow...seriously....im done playing guitar.

this just makes me want to quit so bad.

But the drumfill at 2:49 is ESPECIALLYY WHAOOAOADHOASDHOASDHOWWOOOW

i am definately going to listen to this for a WHOle fucking week straight.

I know this song! ;)

I LOVED this song in the mix contest.

This tone is pretty kickass. It really needs the bass under it to fill out the low end, though. I don't know if I'm digging the triggered snare and kick, though. (Unless I'm retarded and they've always been like that/they aren't triggered.)

Good work.

Just saw this thread. Holy moley, those are some awesome riffs and killer tones. Could you describe your micing technique a little bit more, if it's not a problem. Also, how did you feel about the Portico? I'm basically looking to start purchasing gear, and guitars will be 99% of my focus (well, bass as well, but that's easily DI-able). I know you mentioned that the main guitar sound you hear is is the 421 going to the Avalon... how many different tracks did you stack, and did you use all 3 mics on each?

Thanks for your help.

These photos should illustrate (sp) the technique

Its a great pre! Especially in the low mids, very rich and articulate.

(well, bass as well, but that's easily DI-able).

Micing a cabinet gets better results IMO, but to each his own, right?

It was 3 mics per take, and 2 takes all together.

Ive had some time to get back to it, so here the song with keys and bass if youre interested.

Vocals are next.

Take care.

Is this how you're getting that guitar sound? Any noise gates. I'm sorry I also don't understand a lot of the short names or popular names of gear 'coz I'm a total gear virgin. :)

Latest mix sounds pretty cool. :)

For what it's worth, as a fellow death metalhead (amongst other things), my critique of the new mix is that keyboards are a little too loud for my taste. Of course I don't know exactly what you're trying to convey with the song, in which case the upfront keys might be exactly what you need, but I would say that they're a bit much. I feel that they take away from the power of the guitars a little bit (if anything, they could be a tad bit edgier in the high mids). Nothing huge, but I think I would prefer them to fill out the sound (like bass in most metal mixes) rather than be upfront, especially since it's such a thick and somewhat atmospheric/ambient sound, rather than an edgy lead. Of course, I would like to see how it all falls into play when the vox are added, but that's how I feel about the current mix (which is still kicks a lot of ass).

Just my $0.02.

The role of the keys will make more sense once i get the vox done.

-Thanks for the listen too. :D
