New to the world of cubase and sequencing

Before I begin, I have read and attempted to understand the basics of cubase, but I can simply, for the life of me, cannot register any sound from the vst instruments included with the program. Assuming that I have my audio interface set up correctly, what could be the source of this? I am thinking that my vst connections are not set up correctly. I begin by opening a new project, adding a new midi track, opening a vst instrument, and activating the instrument. However I am getting a message saying, "Your vst instrument is not connected". Exactly what does this mean? It has to be routed to a certain bus? I hope this makes a bit of sense. I realize it's such a "newbie" question. :(
