New to soundboards

Hey everyone, I'm really new to home recording, but I was wondering what soundcard specs I should look for? I'm buying a new computer soon, and wanted to take the opportunity to set up a recording system.
I have a sort of preamp that can connect my soundboards through USB, I just wanted to know what else there is to a soundboard.
