New to sampling - perplexed

Well.. It's pretty stupid for someone to give another a bad rep for typing for a half hour about stuff that took years to learn...

I'm not saying it's you.. I am saying it's wrong..

one more for now - i was messing w/ ReCycle --> Reason w/ a sample, but didn't see the chop points on my sample like those that were on yours Mentalattica. i know you were able to play certain parts using MIDI right? or was i seeing things. like you had a sample that was eh - say 4 parts. you could use MIDI to designate which of those 4 parts you wanted to play & insert into the [song arrangement]. (not sure what it's called at the bottom where you arrange your samples and drums.)

i need to get the keyboard back i was using for midi. too broke to buy a controller. DOH!

Right on.. I'm kinda baffled myself about the whole ordeal...

In ReCycle you can draw in the points or use it's beat detector (there's a sensitivity slider for this part).. Once the breakpoints are setup, move into reason.

Start a new blank project..
Add a mixer..
Add a REX player
Load the REX file into the player
Switch to the piano roll type view

There are different display buttons (top left of the sequencing window).. Select the one that shows the red blocks (This is view that corresponds with REX triggering) (kinda looks like a little stairway)..

Scroll to the lowest part of this view and then try clicking on the slices..

The midi keyboard or drum pad can be used to trigger the slices as well as the pen tool..

Have fun.. Chopping is one of my favorite parts of beat making...

interesting way to do that w/ the piano roll type deal. i know how to do that, wasnt sure what each "slice" was for tho.

i guess i was referring more to where mentalattica imported the REX file to Reason and it looked like he was using his MIDI controller (keyboard) to specify which slice to "record" in the bottom area -- i'll call that the playlist. he was able to play the MIDI and arrange the different slices that way. hmm... i'm just starting to think it's b/c he's using MIDI for it. sorry if i sound like a broken record, i'm typing out my thoughts.

question 2 -
even with the above scenario, when i throw a slice into the 'piano roll' it plays the entire sample REX as if there were no individual slices made in ReCycle, when there were. i had a sample w/ 2 or 3 slices. but in Reason, it acts as though it's one big sample. any idea what i'm doing wrong? (okay, so it's kinda the same question reworded and expanded on, lol)

sorry, just learning. some things can be frustrating at first

i think this may be the solution. i knew i shouldn't have tried to respond so early in the morning *shakes head* sorry if i've confused you further. i'll try this when i get home. i think ment's vids showed something like that and i was too excited to get started to actually take my time, lol.

No prob...

If you click slice 1 and the whole file plays, there is some problem with the rex file.. The slices should visually show up in the dr. rex window as vertical red lines..

I'm not sure what could be the problem with the actual rex file, though... If you made the breakpoints in recycle everything should be good.. If you want I'll take a look at your rex file and see if there's anything weird going on.. I won't be at my studio computer at least until 5'ish EST today and it might be as long as tomorrow...

Interesting problem... can you do a screen shot of reason and post it here?

As far as the midi thing goes.. The computer I'm on won't let me watch the video...

Triggering of the sample with a "musical" keyboard does require midi... Triggering of samples, while recording, using a "typing" keyboard seems a little more difficult.. Then again, I suppose they might have built that into reason on the new version..

In any case, you can always pencil things in and then drag them around..

yeah, i was penciling for the time being. i'd rather use a keyboard/MIDI. but gotta do whatcha gotta do, right?

i'm not at home until 5 (eastern - PA) either, so i'll post a screenshot for you then. like i said, the "stair step" button may be the problem. i didn't have it clicked. if that's the thing that will make the slice lines show in DR Rex, then that's it. if not, i'm confused all over, lol. i'll look more into it tonight when i have time.
