New To Recording

Hey. I play guitar I'm really interested in recording at home. As I said, I'm really new to this (I currently record through a 15$ logitech mic!) so I've not really got any frame of reference for mics and computer programs, etc. I want to know, what would be a good mic to use (for mic'ing an amp - I mainly use a 25watt Peavey for recording) if I was going to use a mic, and what would be a good digital effects/modeling (not sure of the word here, haha) unit that runs into your computer (I'm thinking something like POD or GNX series), and lastly, what are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

For an amp mic, the Shure SM57 is the way to go.If thats out of your budget, go for an Audio Technica MB2K. Brilliant mic for the money.But the 57 is worth it.
