I have a good pc, 24 channel mixer and sm57's/58's.

other than software do i need anything else?

and about software, is any one brand more user friendly (geared for the novice) than others?

would it be better to use an interface box (aardvark aark24) instead of a mixer?

thanks for the help....

Not in my opinion. If its a good mixer hang on to it. Inputs are nice to have!
You still need an audio interface if you plan on recording to the computer. The line in on these soundblaster cards just dont cut it. I would at least use an Audiophile 2496.
I use a Mackie mixer with a Layla and dont plan on giving it up anytime soon.
As far as software gos, cool edit pro is pretty easy. No midi on it so you have to play your midi on something else to record to it.(The new version of Cool edit I dont know) Cakewalk HS I think has midi capability. Some guys like the N-track program. I never did myself. Cakewalk and Cool edit seems to be some of the standard ones starting out..
