I'm very new to cool edit and PC recording in general, just looking for some basic tips. Also, how do I playback while recording so I can record second/third guitar tracks, drums, bass, etc and hear the tracks that have already been recorded? Thanks.

Hi, welcome aboard.

If you want to playback and record at the same time, you need two things - a full duplex soundcard, and the right settings in Cool Edit.

When you're in multitrack, click on the little square to the left of Track 1 and beside the Record button - you'll get the Recording Device dialog. Click on Device List, and it'll take you to a chart that lets you assign all your playback and recording devices for your soundcard.

Then after you've recorded a track and disarmed it, you can set up the next track you want to record, and while you're recording it, you can hear the previosly recorded tracks through the headphones. (Assuming you've got headphones and have hooked them up right. :D)

Okay, the tip. Take your time and learn as you go. This is a great site - do searches and ask questions.

can i playback a track that i've recorded in my headphones as well as hear the track i'm currently recording? do i have to have a special soundcard for this?

thanks

Thanks for the info dobro, I'll try that out later today. I'm using a Gina20 so it should definately be possible. Thanks again.

Skaltpunk - if your soundcard is full duplex, then yes, you can hear playback and recording at the same time.

Of course, you'll need either a soundcard that has a headphone out, or a mixer that has the same - you need something to plug the headphones into - a mixer's cool because you can adjust the sound of what you're hearing in terms of EQ and level and maybe effects.

and dont forget to fuse the neutrinoes into a static array before you turn your lights on. This will vastly improve your dynamic sonic equalibrium settings.

camn is taking the piss, God bless his cotton socks...

a good source of help for Cool Edit problems is http://forums.syntrillium.com

Syntrillium Support moderate the site and usually try to solve most problems on the board within a day or two.

Having said that, this site is streets ahead as far as general recording knowledge goes. Do a search by user name and look for posts by sjoko2, sonusman, blue bear sound, shaliat etc.

You will find alot of stuff that is not relevant to you, often because it discusses gear you may never afford, but there is some invaluable theory floating around here.

pAp.

listen to camn. the oscillating reverbulator clicks on when you switch the maximum sonicater to overdrive the two-frame disk changer.:)

There.

I like this sort of thread because of the way it makes me feel.

What kind of sound card do you use skatepunk?
