New To Computer Recording

here's the deal: i play guitar, have a laptop computer. i am about to get cool edit pro, just to record some stuff. how will I plug my guitar into the laptop, which doesn't have a "guitar hole" or whatever you call it. can someone lead me in the right direction?

i appreciate the info, but let me run this by you.... if I buy an interface, let's say a line 6, or any other standard interface, do I have to have certain software for the interface to work? in other words, are these interfaces "universal" for recording software? i will be using cool edit pro.
 
I don't use any kind of interface with my computer. I just use a 1/4" to 1/8" mono adaptor so I can plug the guitar directly into the mic input of the sound card. I'm lucky enough to have a S/C that has a decent sounding mic preamp. You can also use a mono to stereo adaptor so you can use an effects processor or pedal. Go from the processor output to the line in input on your card. If your processor has a stereo out you just need a stereo "Y" adaptor so will get separate left & right channels.

This, by no means, would be considered a "professional" setup, but it will get you going so you can record your ideas on something with multi-track abilities.
 
A variety of hardware will work with Cool Edit Pro/Adobe Audition. I've used Lexicon and Terratec sound cards, a Tascam US-428 with a USB interface, a Mackie Control, and other stuff. You just select whatever hardware you are using in Options/Device Order and off you go. I've never run into any problems, other than "operator error."

Sloom had problems using an older MOTU 2408 with a 324 PCI card, but apparently the newer 424 PCI card works fine with the software. It's always useful to see if the manufacturer has a "compatability" chart, by the way.
