Hello Folks,
I was going to wait until I had this virtually finished before posting but decided the demonstrate the FLAC option for those interested.
THere are two versions of this track to download & listen to.
a) the 320 MP3 compression - which is pretty good quality in comparison to the download and stream options from most established sites &
b) the FLAC lossless compression - if played on winamp or similar FLAC enabled players it should sound pretty good compared to the 320 - as it's wav. quality. If converted/decoded from FLAC to wav using SUPER, Easy CD-DA extractor or simialr you should have a full range wav. file that can be played on heaps of things.
THE TRACK.
This track is a rerecording of a thing I've had sitting idle for a couple of years. It's faster & much shorter than it's parent version, (the dad has lyrics & stuff that suit a more maudline/funerary pace).
Gerry/Ido1957 did the intro, solo & outro lead guitar parts, (he did much more but I'll not mix them in just yet).
Lots of rhythm guitar tracks using my Sheraton II for a couple, Bruno Royal Artist for most & a Yamaha FX 500 for the synth sounding guitar tracks. I also used a Behri BDI21 for a few guitar tracks, a Jimi Hendrix Dunlop Wha Wha for 1 track and the Yamaha + Wah for a stereo bit.
Drums are by my Roland TR505 for the present.
Bass is my vantage through the preamp of my old yamaha MT100 4 track.
Percussion through the same pre I think.

I tweaked the bass a little this evening but didn't "audition" the changes all the way through & I discovered after the fact that it pops up a bit loud in a couple of places.
Comments onm the mix, structure, song, instrument separation, poor playing and the difference/similarities of the two copmpression formats are most welcome.
Oh, I uploaded the two files to mega at the same time - the FLAC took about ten minutes longer than the MP3.
Oops - there's a little bit of reverb & a limiter on the stereo bus as I tracked this a bit too quietly AND there's a Big Muff clone going into the wah.
320 MP3 =12 meg
FLAC (at setting 8) = 35 meg
wav = 60 meg

Sneaking a listen to the MP3 at work on my Sony earbuds. The snare is a bit loud and snappy for me, but the rest seems to be pretty good levels/tones. The intro/breaks are good - I like the treatment - sort of a chorus?flangey?reverb? thing. Sounds good so far!

Its sounds like one of your tunes from the off...I like the jangly vibe, i think the bass could do with a tiny nudge, or maybe some low end boost...I really liked the playing..I kinda get lost a bit with vocals as the guitars fill so much of it up, Id love to hear Joey do another bowie thing on this..in fact when I hear the guitars Im just waiting for his vocals to come in..without them or a build up the first solo parts/bridge thingy came in a little awkwardly

drums are what they are..get greg on 'em..I think you could finish this to be the master part II :) please:D

Hey I have this one already. I've done some drum ideas for it, but nothing set in stone yet. Nothing fancy. Now that I'm finished tracking my Greg Sphinctorish wall of shit masterpiece, I'm gonna get focused on this.

Gerry,
I added some Glaceverb (inside small room) to your guitar parts - nothing else. Great job you did. I think the extra snap comes from Blockfish. I'll work on that.
Kcearl,
I hear they're going to rerecord a Suzi Quatro classic just for you - Ban the man! I'll look at the bass. I was afraid it'd suffer from bass player mixer! Some more bottom end coming up. I'd love to meet your expectations mate. We'll see how we go.
Greg,
A wall of sound piece? That'll be interesting - but then again you have done the Beach Boys previoulsy so I know you're up to the challenge. Fill Sphinctor would be proud if his hair allowed.

The drums are nowhere near as snappy with my AKG 271's on. Just a little loud. Earbuds.... The Glaceverb does sound nice. I'm getting a bit of Sheraton vibe compared to the last version. How's the neck feel on that compared to say your #1.

Greg,
You've moved to the wrong coast for MONO. CA is dayglo meets cinemascope with 5.1 in your breakfast cereal.
I look forward to hearing it.
My, more modest, guitar count:
Bruno Royal Artist - 3 x BDI21 various settings (these are the dominant tracks)
- 1 x Yamaha FX 500 stereo "lush"
- 1 x " " stereo Cello Focus custom setting
- 1 x delay
- 1 x Pignose & 57 w Big Muff clone
- 1 x Peavey Bandit & 57 w Big Muff clone
- 1 x Chiming custom setting in the Yamaha
- 1 x arpeggiated chords & tube amp VST
Epi Sheraton II - 1 x Marshall Superbass & 57 w Big Fluff
- 1 x Wah into stereo cello focus
- 1 x Cello Focus
- 1 x Big Muff into Wah
17 in total counting the stereo pairs as 2 - Excessive isn't it!
Add to that the 3 tracks of Strat based lead work from Gerry = 20.
Gerry, everything about the Sheraton is great except for the toggle switch, (has to be fiddled with to select the bridge pick up) & the gold plating/cheap nickle pickup cases (started pitting in the 1st month). The neck is better for me each time I play it as it's wider than the Bruno. Arthritis is slowly killing my ability to bend my left index finger in far enough to finish a C chord on the narrower Bruno.

Chord progression is really good. Nice change up at 3.30. Needs vocals like the desert needs the rain

Wow - lots of tracks! My laptop (work machine too) craps out after about 10 tracks (if I use plugins). For tracking I'll do it in one project, then pull my favorite tracks into the master project and add plugins.

Nice sound rayc - I was going to say it sounds like it needs some more low end, but it looks like you're already onto it. The wah is nice and subtle in the background. Are there some vocals on the way?

Bulls Hit,
thank you kindly. The chorus progression is the reverse sequqnce of a song I worked on in '76!!!!! I did the thing Bowie did around then - reverse & rerecord. The intro progression is a lift from an after though bit on a live velvet underground track (Velvet Underground with Lou Reed Live 1969 green cover with stocking legs). The verse - hmmm, jsut sort of came to me whilst shuffleing chords. Vocals - yep needs 'em like bleach needs a stain!
Gerry,
My laptop, Acer travelmate, is so old I'm not game to record more than three or four tracks into it! It was given to me 6 years ago - & was sold as a refurbished unit. Still - it does everything I ask of a laptop except decent music.
robgreen,
Thanks mate. Yeah, bottom end on the bass has been dealt with. Bottom end in the drum world will come with the real drums, (Greg does an exceptional job of recording his kit). As for vocals, they are planned and will come in time as the likely vocalist is in great demand on top of being a working & family person in the real world.
Has any one tried the FLAC option?
If Y - any comments?

HEY, (I had to use it after listening to the beatles cover!!!), has anyone tried the FLAC? How about the schnitzle?

I took the FLAC but had some trouble with getting a decoder. So I gave up and took the MP3. Impatience.....
