Hey guys, new studio owner here, just some last things to get done, but I can't wait until it's all finished! :) Yesterday I put the last board in place on the extension in the back yard, and tomorrow I'm going to take care of the soundproofing. I have, like, maybe 400 empty egg crates saved up - man, I've been saving up those bad boys for years, and I'm just gonna put them on the walls, on the roof, you know, just soundproof it up real good.

I just want to say thanks to everyone on here for helping me out. I've been going through some really tough times lately, and the only thought that has kept me going is my new studio in the backyard. And you know what the best thing about it is? I'm going to be able to turn my life around for free!!! Yep, the lumber I used to build the room was all scavenged from building sites, and I've already told you about the egg cartons! Can you believe that? Free soundproofing material, and all you gotta do is ask the grocery store manager!!!! I'm just going to order some microphones - nothing fancy, just the best I can find for under a hundred bucks - and then I'll be all set to lay down some grooves. And the neighbours won't be able to hear anything!!!

Thanks again, from a super-excited homerecorder!!! :)

jumbo size or standard egg cartons?

foam or that whacky shit, glued-hard recycled paper type?

i think for deep bass you need the jumbo size egg cartons. with the cup away from the wall.
for the high end hz, you probably want the hard shit-paper cartons opposite to act as deflectors.

sound molecules love to bounce off objects, each time losing energy thus reducing reflections

if you have sticky yellow smelly crap in the cartons the sound molecules will stick to the egg cartons..

if you notice buzzing noises on your recordings its probably a fly caught in the sticky, yellow barf-like smelly material. it's no big deal though, the buzz will eventually degrade to near 20khz levels anyway.

good luck!! sounds great.

what are you going to put on your windows?

Wait a minute!

You mean I have to treat the windows too!

Oh wait, nevermind. I don't have windows.... :o

Sorry, carry on.... :D

Hey, I'm leaving out some smileys!

:)  :p ;) :(

There....

you could put on some chrome-window tint to reflect the sound molecules.

of course the neighbors couldn't see you dancing around naked anymore.. :p

I didn't put windows in it. I read this interview with George Martin or Neil Young or someone, and they were all like, 'don't have windows in a recording studio, because the sound, like, escapes through them.' So, I don't have windows. You know the way the colour black attracts heat, right? I also painted all the egg cartons black, so they will kinda soak up the sound, and stop it getting out.

Is that true about the fly? Ohmigod!!! Imagine, you can hear that on a recording. I'll clean out my egg crates first. Thanks for the help guys! If anyone has anymore useful tips, please keep them coming. :)

This is complete bullshit. This kind of information should be put out there on the internet as fact. Your post could be very misleading to guys just starting out so I am going to set the record straight.
First let me say that I do agree that the jumbo egg cartons are best for deep bass but I am going to have to disagree with the statement that the cup side should go away from the wall. There is no scientific proof that the cup side can't be against the wall and still provide maximum sound proofing.
As a matter of fact I have half of my living room treated cup side up and the other half cup side down. Don't get me wrong you can still hear shit out on the street but I'm sure if I can figure out how to close off my chimney that will take care of that.
Anyway I'm sorry I had to call you on that. No hard feelings eh? ;)

Caulk! or maybe spray foam. that way when you are through you can simply start a fire and it will go away!

You guys are joking about the egg cartons right? I wouldn't waste time putting that shit up on walls, not to mention they probably aren't anywhere close to meeting fire code.

tmix, I am born anew in your genius.

 Thats not even funny. What your little joke suggests to newbies is its ok to use materials that may BURN THEIR HOME DOWN!!! Not only are eggcartons flamable, they are also useless for soundproofing, as well as acoustic treatment. Well, not completely. They do have absorption qualities, as do all materials to an extent, but compared to other materials such as rigid fiberglass and mineral wool, they SUCK  Heres the proof.

I know your little joke was inspired over at the cave, but in case you didn't think about it, its crap like this that helps spread these kind of myths. So as far as I'm concerned, your little joke is NOT FUCKING FUNNY!!

Here is some more myths.

Is your studio humour-proof too?

Yes it is. And so is my music.. According to Sony and EMI.

As for me wasting my time reading it, people come here for help from people like me. Even though im only 18 i still take my time to come and help people, YOU wasted time that could have been spent helping someone who needed it.

Braindead fuck.

Actually, I wasted nothing, I didn't start the post. And as was said, you didn't have to read it, you chose to come here and read it. If you come to help people, help people. Maybe if you're good, they'll throw you a quickie in Sony's Exec Lounge. You're just an idiot.

He read it to see if there was anything that he could do to help, as did i, and I'm sure many others. The post was irresponsible, and technominds decided to speak up about that, as did Rick etc. If you decide to back the original post then YOU are "just an idiot".
