Hey gang, first of all let me say that I am glad that i found this forum, I participate in a lot of other forums and stuff and this one by far is a good one. At any rate the situation I am faced with is the following, I am finishing of a basement, and I am getting ready to do a studio. The things that I have seen that I like are the following:

1. Sound room(big enough for 1 vocalist)
2. Sectioned out office furniture for my dual monitor DAW
3. Rack for keyboards
4. Sound booth needs to be isolated, but studio doesn't have to be totally isolated from the rest of the area.

My challenges are, I have a HVAC unit, and Hotwater heater, and a main breaker panel in the area that i want to use. I have several options of what to do about the HVAC and water heater, and I think I will be building a wall there with the typical closet doors so that those units can breath, but I am still challenged with what sound they will make.

The two pictures I have included are...1 of the current area as it stands, and one of the area where the studio will be and its dimensions. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The other pics detailing my ideas are at the following locations:

I've mixed near furnaces and HVAC systems before, and I treated the area the same way you are considering. With a vented door, the sound is muffled significantly, but you will probably still hear it. If your vocal booth is well built none of this noise will enter your microphones (at least when the mics are used within the vocal booths), but while mixing, every so often you'll here the furnace/HVAC (and hot water heater if gas) click on with a nice clanging sound.

A good friend of mine has a recording area (live room) in his basement, and of course, furnaces/HVAC clicking on and off would be unacceptable. So, he built a 12" thick wall around the units, installed in a thick door, and now its completely isolated as far as sound. I could barely hear it clicking on and off. What I thought was very clever was that he vented the hvac area to the outside of the house - his basement was not fully underground and there was room for a screened window that he could open and close (he leaves it open). It cost him about $500 including the cement work, using a casement window purchased from home depot.

If you can do it yourself, the window cost him about $200.

I wasn't able to view your attached pictures due to my company's firewall (I'll check them at home) but if the HVAC stuff is close enough to a wall, or corner, this might be a reasonable thing to do. I'd rather spend $500 to make things dead quiet :)

His basement "live" room ended up very nice... mahogony hardwood tongue and groove flooring (engineered) laid upon two layers of MDF, resting upon rubber blocks that are about 1" thick uncompressed. The walls are 4" off the concrete, filled with the usual sound absorbing foam and such, with sheet rock on top, covered with studio foam (3" wedges) in 2'x2' squares seperated by 4" (thus exposing the wall every 4") all the way around. The ceiling was constructed in the same manner as the walls. Sometimes I wish my construction skills were stronger :) Anyway, I hope I helped you out.

Still can't get yer images

Rae,

Sorry, I still can't get your images. Also note that your maintitle.gif takes forever to load. I don't think it's just me, as I can get to plenty of other sites with no load problems.

I am in the process of designing/building my own studio, so I am eager to see pics...

There is something screwy with my website, I tested this last night and someone told me that they could see the pictures. I just assumed it was ready for everyone to see.

Hopefully it will be fixed this evening, thanks for the patience.

While you look, is there an easy way of hanging sheet rock on walls? Maybe sometype of thing would stripping or something, or do I have to build a frame. At this rate inches count to me.

Thanks

Go with wood strapping it cheap Use concrete nails with the gun to put it up
then just screw your sheet rock to the strapping very easy to do
