New soundcard

I've posted this elsewhere with no luck. I'm coming back here because this board consistently gives good info and help.

I am using HS2004XL and I have used it with success(which is a relsative term I guess) using my onboard Allegro soundcard. I finally installed a new Audiophile2496 soundcard and the thing sounds great except for I problem.

My MIDI tracks which I have routed out to DeltaAP MIDI has no sound. All other tracks are fine, Audio, Edirol, DXi synth, etc. This one type of trac I cannot get a sound out of.

It just so happens that this track is being fed by a MIDIFX plug in called Rhythm'n'Chords. It worked fine before, what's the deal.

The Audiophile has no onboard synth. This is typical of the better sound cards. Most "low end" cards used for games have internal synths.

The "midi out" is there simply to allow you to route midi through the sound card to an external synth (e.g., a keyboard).

My suggestion is to simply use DXi's for playback and don't worry about it.

exactly. i guess you could use the midi out to route to an outboard synth???

are there any high quality soundcards with built in synths? never really heard of any...

I think STaudio had one with built-in synth. The Envy24 chip in these and other cards like the Audiophile can come in a version with a wavetable synth, though I don't know if the STaudio has that type of Envy24, certainly M-audio doesn't. Not to be confused with another STaudio card that simply came with a YamahaXG software synth.
Terratec DMX6fire had a daughterboard connector so you could fit a Yamaha DB50/1XG synth, so does TurtleBeach SantCruz.
A lot of cheap consumer soundchips found on motherboards are a bit cheeky - they actually don't have a synth, but rely on the Microsoft GS soft synth.
