Well, I don't listen to much metal, but this sounds like I would expect it to. Well recorded and mixed, overall. The hi-hat sound during the verse is not my favorite (maybe just too loud). Keep it up.

Thanks for looking...

Yes. I agree. The hi-hat is loud in the mix. The reason for that is because it kinda gets lost in the second part of the verses (not in the preview). I turned it up as just a reminder that its still there.

Thanks for your feedback. :)

I will be taking the preview off of my web site for good in a day or two. If you want to hear it, you'd better do it now. While you're at it, why don't you give me some feedback as well.

Thanks.

I like it, but you could of guessed that based on some of the stuff I produce. :D

The bass is lost in there, or isn't doing anything the guitars aren't already playing. Metal's tough to find room for inventive basslines, but that doesn't mean they can't be written!

But overall I don't have a heck of a lot to say bad about it. The vocals (from what I heard) were very 'modern'. At least we're back to real men with real men voices singing and not Jon Anderson (Yes) clones singing about Shiney Happy People. I don't listen to the radio (my car stereo's turned to AM static... no really), but when I'm forced to much of it sounds like this, so you're 'in' on the sound. Demon Hunter came to mind (have a few MP3s a friend shared to keep me 'hip'. The riff you played, though, definitely fits the more aggressive side of metal (almost death metal). Like the guitar tone too, not so heavy my balls vibrate but not so twangy you get accused of being "sonically messy". lmao

You folks should look into buying a cheap webhosting package for like $8 /month to host your stuff. My site piggybacks off a hiking forum I administer. Kill 2 birds with one stone with plenty of bandwidth and storage to spare. Hell, I blow $8 a day on lunch! With the talent I hear there's no reason not to get yourselves out there more.

Well, thank you very much for listening. Man, I never thought in a million years that it would be so hard just to get someone to listen to a song.

Anyway... Yeah, I agree with you on the bass aspect but I have to say that it is at a "safe" level. If I were to go any higher, we'd have massive issues with muddiness and poor clarity. And plus... I have a little, tiny secret... That's not a bass you're hearing! Its a guitar with a pitch shift on it. I don't like to use basses. I like the playability of guitars. They're so much easier to play and don't cost an arm and a leg when you want to change a string.

About the guitar sound... I used a Digitech GNX2. The distorted sound I used for the chorus is an effect I developed myself. The guitar you hear in the verse is actually a sound that came as a preset. It was called HILLBLLY. There's also a sound in the beginning that had a triggered flanger on it and that also came as a preset... I think it was DIVEBOMB. I recorded direct and only digitally modified when I absolutely had to.

I used Cool Edit Pro 2.0 to record the whole thing. Let me tell you... I love this program soooooo much! It is the best program I have ever used!

I have had a whole lot of people aske me what that clicking sound is in the intro and when I tell them, they always have this stupified look on their face... It was chop sticks!

For the vocals, I used cheap $30 RadioShack mics, a wind screen I made out of nylons, and various modulation/delay effects via CEP 2.0.

I hope this explained everything.

Thank you for your comments.

Sounds like The Boogiemen's earliest recordings, using only a cheap Washburn acoustic for electric, slide, and bass tracks. And yes, even we used the cheap but adequate radio shack mics!!! :p I still have one laying around for backup uses, they're really good for kick around mics.

I wouldn't trade the luxuries of better gear for the headache and mediocre quality of the early days, though many of those songs still make the 'best of' list and it is fun to brag about only using a crappy acoustic to create believable musack.

So, that's to say I can relate! lol

Full Length Versions!

Hey guys! Just letting you know that I have posted a full length version of the song on a secondary site. You shouldn't have any trouble listening to it. Just don't try to download it... It won't let you. Anyway, you'll also find full length versions of two of my other songs... If you want, give them a listen, too, and tell me what you think. Here's the link:

Enjoy!

dude, this song is great. the girl's vocals and the chopsticks absolutely make the intro - i'd love to download a full version if you have one up anywhere (i can't stream it, as i'm on dialup). very crisp, good sound. the lightly distorted flange sounds cool. this made me want to get in my car and drive really fast and run over chickens and shit.

i have a trick for muddy bass sounds in CoolEdit - just make two copies of the bass track. leave one the way it is, carrying the brunt of the lo-freq sounds, and make the other one punchier in the midrange & treble for all the picks & funky slaps & pings & stuff (since it's a pitch-shifted guitar, i don't know if those exist in this track), and roll off the bottom end. then i leave the bottom-end bass through the whole thing, but bring in the higher-end one for parts where you really want to notice what the bass is doing (intros, bridges, breakdowns before choruses, etc) using the volume envelopes in Multitrack mode. even a couple seconds at a time if there's something cool to be heard.

i can't wait to hear the completed finished version!

Matt

Thanks for your comments. I'll give that bass trick a try. Oh... If you do go running over chickens, don't do it by where I live... People have been known to kill people over shit like that!

I think the guitars are too crunchy. Not enough oomph / mid-range. It could also be because you're not using a real bass. Cool recording, anyway.

Wait! Are you guys talking about Decay In Space (demo) or one of the other songs? I was just trying to figure that out. If you could clear this up, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

100 posts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!

i was talking about the first one, the preview.mp3. the one with the chopsticks.

Thanks for all the feedback. If anyone else wants to give me some feedback, please feel free.

kelly clarkstons new song is pretty good

SINCE U BEEN GONE YEAH YEAH

TO HELL WITH THAT ONE-HIT-WONDER-WENCH! I'd like to see her play all of her instruments, sing all of her vocals and record all of her songs! American Idol is the worst thing that has ever happened to this country. Anyone here who thinks that [the show] American Idol is great, seriously needs to get their head checked... Including you, Seifer!

I still have the song "american idol" that you posted a long time ago

it sucks pretty bad

Well, guess what...

This thread isn't about that song, is it?

WTF is your problem?

If you thought it sucked soooo bad, why do you still have it?

Fuck you!

ok

your latest sounds like you made a -87dB cut in the middle and a low and high shelf boost of about 91dB; good job. the compression sounds like it was misused pretty bad too
