OMG!
Heyo. I just finished mixing another song from my band, The Premier. I decided to approach it differently. It didn't really work, but I think the mix is coming out really nice. Please let me know what you think of it, what I should change, blah blah. The piano sample towards the end is driving me nuts. I don't think I'm going to keep it as t is now, I've got to work on getting it more in time. My soundfonts are also apparantly not in tune? Eh. My band used to have a different singer. He left because he felt he was taking away from his other band, eh. Now I get to sing. Woo. I sing lead on the first "verse" and a bunch of backups. My bassist does most of the rest and my drummer does the middle part. Arrangemenet-wise, the song isn't going to change. I'm aware that the transition in the beginning isn't the best, but we've played it like that for the past 9 months and we're not really up for changing the recording either.

So.. please let me know what you think. If you want to hear two other songs, go to http://www.purevolume.com/thepremier .

Thanks.

Dude, I'm really digging this stuff. You're a pretty good singer. The mix sounds good. That doesn't go without criticism though. Here's some things I'd improve.

The lead guitar is a little too loud.
Right after "like we're family", the guitar sounds weird. I dunno if it's just the playing or if it's fixable with compression.
And yeah that piano sample is terrible.

sounds good, and i like the song.

thare is some distortion though, on the git in the R

maby turn it down some too?

i like the crappy piano sample, hell i'd turn it up

Dude, awesome :-)
Lots and lots of energy. Hey, I'm not a big fan of that redundant "emo" style, but you pull it off very well. Sounds like a cross between The Get Up Kids and Brand New. If you haven't heard The Get Up Kids, definitely run to the store and get their latest album "Guilt Show". You'll love it. It's a different spin on that whole emo scene.

Keep it up! Rock on. Good luck :D

Not a bad tune. Nice job on the vox, especially given the circumstances. The guitars are mixed too loud and I don't care much for the tone of any of them. They are very cheap sounding. The tune deserves better, IMO. Other than that, nice work.

Apparantly, I was a little too excited to put this up. Heh. Listening to it now, the guitars are a bit too loud. This is our poppiest song, sorry about that. Heh. Hmm, the guitars. I may have put a little bit too much of "Da Tube" on them. We used a 5150 with two $600 guitars. We didn't use horrrible gear. :)

Firetech, most of our stuff isn't this redundant. Generally when I write, I try to keep it with a generic sound but with little bits of "What the hell was that?" Like that random measure of 3/4 under the "dying". In other songs, it'll go from a laid back 4/4 groove to a distorted chromatic sequence. I'm not too big of a fan of Brand New and I haven't really gotten into The Get Up Kids. My bassist and drummer think Matt Prior(sp) is a genius. I don't see it. Heh.

Thanks for listening, guys. Anyone else?

EDIT: Not that any of you will care, but we just got asked to be posted on Absolutepunk.net's mainpage in their "Absolutely Unsigned" section. It's a section where they feature bands that they think are "the best in the country". They do 10 a month, but we still got picked. Woo.

Also, I'm working on that piano part. I'll get it eventually.

Good mix - though toms sound kinda crappy - vocals arent sitting right (I'm being very critical, btw) - and I think the bass guitar could go up a little. Seems like the whole mix has a little too much low end (maybe roll off below 50hz, this is probably just the bass. Roll that off and then turn it up!). Just my thoughts, nothing you should actually listen to. :) Good mix otherwise.

I've done that. :D

Cool, dude. Congrats.

What the hell is the bitrate on those .mp3s They sound like crap. Doesn't that purevolume joint have a bitrate cap? You should host them somewhere else. As soon as the swirly mess of high end shit comes in I shut it off.

geet, the song you posted sounds way better than the purevolume stuff. The purevolume stuff sounds very low bitrate, so that hurt it. The one you posted had a good mix, and was a cool tune. I'd like to hear some better versions of the other songs, but the new one is definitly good.

Good job at writing, recording, and mixing it.
Ed

Oooops, I didn't see the "If you want to hear the other two songs" line. I'll go to your website and have a listen.

Here are the two songs from purevolume in 320VBR, I think. They're a lot better than purevolume. That site sounds like shit. Sorry about that.

Here's the song in question, slightly remixed. I turned down the guitars a bit, but they still sound a bit loud. Maybe I should stop fucking around with T-Racks. I also took "Da Tube" off of them. I made the bass a little bit louder, and made it a bit more present. I made the sample less shitty sounding, not much. It's still too fast and slightly out of tune.. just ignore it for now, I guess. Umm. I changed a few other things too. This song is going to be posted on that Absolutepunk.net thing, so I'd like to get the best mix I can. It's going to get heard by A LOT of people. If it sucks, let me know.

Thanks, everyone.

EDIT: The first two songs are with the old vocalist. Tell me if you think we're doing alright without him. We're going to stay as a 4-piece until we feel we can't handle it. Hopefully we don't sound too bad doing it. Heh.

Based on the recordings, I think you're doing pretty well. Did your singer play an instrument? A lot of people won't take bands seriously if the singer doesn't play anything.

"A lot of people won't take bands seriously if the singer doesn't play anything."

What?
Most bands i know and love the singer ONLY sings.

The mix sounds quite good, lo end aint the best though and guitars aint got that lo end grizzle.
Quite a weird layout for the song not too sure on it.
not bad though.

No, he didn't. A lot of bands these days seem to be 5-pieces with a seperate singer. I think it's more impressive to see a 4-piece pull stuff off.

Ecktronic, I always get worried about the low end. I'm always worried that I'm going to get it way too boomy or something so I tend to cut back. I'm going to have the rest of the band come in to make a finalized mix. I'll boost it then.

Thanks, guys. :)

I almost didn't listen since you start off your post saying that it didn't work or something. Is it common to mix the lead vocal that low in this style? Sounds produced and you put a lot of work into it. I can't remember one word tho, if that matters, I don't know.

Don't get me wrong, I know there are good bands out there with a separate singer. Sometimes it just gets redundant, like bands with three guitarists that play the exact same thing. But it's more impressive to a talent scout/agent if a 4-peice band can pull off what a 5-peice can do. Less is more. Oh and it's really impressive if everyone in the band or majority of it can sing well together. This is from a professional standpoint.

Now personally... I see a lot of different bands and it just bothers me when the singer has nothing to do, so he climbs the rafters or jumps off speaker cabinets. It's really stupid if the band isn't backing him up with a rocking tune, because he just looks like an idiot. But that's just how music is nowadays, the quality/talent of it is really lacking.

I noticed the vocal was a little too low after I ran it through T-racks too. I'll definitely be bumping those up later.

Thanks,Tifstorey.

Thank you, everyone. The input is really helpful. When you're mixing, you always get into a "groove" I guess and you don't notice little things like this all the time. It also doesn't help that it's my band, my voice, and my music. But seriously, thanks for the kind words and for the assistance.

Good stuff geetster.
Nice and creative.
Toms are too boomy..
Thats all.
See ya'.
