It's been a while since I've posted anything new...

Here is a song I've been working on for over a month now.... I got fed up with the original arrangement and wiped it out and started out fresh with a slighly different approach...

I put the drums down on wednesday eve... and did the rest yesterday afternoon..

Spent 10 minutes mixing... Heck there isn't even an ending yet, it just drops off *LOL*

I am looking for some honest opinions....

(keep in mind, it hasn't even been mastered yet either..)

Haha, that intro got me. I was thinking, man vox's stuff usually sounds better than this. I better not listen to him anymore. Sounds really good though, man. I especially like your kick drum tone.

Thanks....

Yeah, contrast is becoming sort of a Voxvendor Trademark.....

Im really getting onto this shock value thing... Having a song with a semi-crappy beginning and then BANG, everything jumps in....

The only problem with that is it can become very old very quick... Especially if you use it on every song on your album...

I have to fight the urge..... :D

Anyways... thanks for listening.....

Oh, the kick eh?... Nothing special, just my DR Rythmn Drum machine...

Im really happy with the sounds on that little thing... It's good, as long as you stay away from the cymbals and Hats, cause they sound horrid....

Oh ya...

Hey Fogarty.. What did ya think of the vocals in the chorus.....?? I was sort of unsure about them, but they are kind-of growing on me....

75 seperately sang layers..... and a hell of alot of compression and eq..

early 90's --Rembrandts type stuff, with a modern touch of Pete Yorn to it. i like the bass, except it's Pixies song..actually i think the whole tune is a pixies song..:) good job, sounds good, not great

hey Voxvendor,

seemed to translate well on both my monitors and in my headsets...

kick had decent thud and smack...present but not overbearing...

Guitars again were well balanced and the imaging seem good...

Vocals the same...especially the chorus seemed to lay well in the mix...

i didn't find much that i didn't like or that seemed out of place.

great job...

I didn't know that that Dr. Rythm thing sounded that good. It sounds pretty decent. The only thing about the chorus vocals is that I think they are lacking another track ;) Like you have the background vocals for the chorus done, but there's no lead. I'd put in another take singing the melody thats real up front, stands out from the rest.

Listening to the song some more, that synth lead is pretty cool. I dig simple kinda lines with interesting sounds like that. Very cool.

I dig the ending too. Don't change that one bit! :)

Who are the Pixies?.. Is that a rock band..... Sounds familiar... and what song does mine sound like?

Now im curious...

I have never heard of Pixies let alone hearing there songs, so I can assure you that any similarities are coinciedintal..:(

Thanks for listening.

You like the ending?????

There is no ending...... Your losing me fogarty.. *LOL*

Normally I would agree with you about the background vocals.. but I was going for that Def Leppard sound, where its just a blended layer, rather than a lead with some backings....

But, as I say I know exactly what your thinking of, and yeah that would sound cool, but I was really looking for that Def Leppard Vocal style for this chorus....

The Lead..... Yeah Very simple... I made it up as I went along and it was about a 5th take.....

I used my Roland Groove Keyboard.... (same thing for that distorted piano heard during the verses...)

When I first read your post, I had a bit of a chuckle, when you said the chorus vocals are lacking one extra track.....
....I was thinking "There are already 75 layers, when the heck does this guy want from me" :D

Cool man, thanks for the insight..

Yeah, I was joking, I'll use more winks to indicate a joke ;););)

Wow, now that you mention def leppard, I totally get it. It is very def leppardy.

You can never have too many layers ;););)

Cool man, thanks for the insight..

Anytime. I may not know much but I still try. Its good to have as many view points on a song, knowledgable or not. Plus its nice to hear a really well recorded song on here every know and then.

It doesnt sound like 75 layers. You could have done it in less time with 4 or so MAX and still got the same result. The song is o.k.

Absolutely Not...

You Do it in 4 and post it for me, and I'll tell you what I think...:)

Never mind, the qualities of the singer or equipment.... You need at least 20 layers just to get the "Airyness"..... Yeah, with eq you can crisp it up, but to get the Airy sound, you need that singers breathy quality in his voice to layer it self many, many times, in order to get the proper smoothness.

4 layers will not do that..

Anyways.... I could talk about layering for hours, It's one of my strongest ability's and favorite parts of recording........but not tonight.....:D

Thanks for listening

I thought the vocals could come up a bit. The intro sound is in the right direction, but I don't think you are getting a "crappy' enough of a sound for enough contrast. Maybe pan it off to one side, or something too...just a thought ...and since it is fairly long, you kinda wonder if the recording quality is going to be this sucky all the way thru. I was reading the posts, while listening, so I knew what was coming. I hear the layering, but it needs to be louder, imo.
the guitars sound ok, but lack the "live punch' you hear with a wall of amps...which is kinda the direction the distorted gtr is going in...or at least it seems.
I like the backwards stuff at 1:37...nice tune, overall....bring the bg vocs up!!

vox,

75 layers? That is INSANE! WOW. Song sounds like it's ready for the radio to me. You nailed that Def Leppardish sound on the chorus. mixmkr bought up a few points, but I would say this one's ready to go. And I really DO like that it cuts off, though I know why it is. I cant believe that's 75 layers. I knew it sounded good, but shhheeshhhhh. Smoooothnes that could not come from 4 vocals me thinks.

Nice Job!

cool.

later.

I'm gonna agree on this one too. Nothing craps stuff up better than alot of compression.

Backwards stuff?... There is a chorus at 1:37....

Are you refering to the cymbals I have reversed before each chorus???

Just wondering... Kind of struck me, cause other than a few little cymbals, I didn't put anything backwards in *LOL*

Yeah, About the crappy beginning... Im still toying with a few Ideas... Rather than eqing it to be crappy, I might add an effect that makes it cut out here and there in a distorted way..

Sort of like Fm radio, when your going in and out of a bad reception area.... But still just in the Idea stage...

Im worried that If I make it too crappy, people might say. "this is crap" and not listen any further.. so thats what Im fighting with right now

Oh and yeah, the guitars are purously geared towards a grunge sound rather than a heavy metal sound....

I know what you mean, about having a nice stack of marshalls, on stage, but I go for more of a "Randall" sound, with a kicked in woofer... *LOL*

Seriously.. I try and lean a bit more towards Grunge.... But not really successful....

I've had people comment that what I do is a weird combination... Sort of overproduced glossy sounding Grunge....

You've got your Def Leppard, and Bon Jovi... and then you;ve got Nirvana and Offspring...

I sort of put them in a blender and mix em up, and this is what I come up with *LOL*

Thanks for the insight Mix...

Joe
