new song.... 'Hope'

...some new tunes...

...the vocals on 'Hope' are a little more 'tonge n' cheek' than I wanted, but I'm not really a singer....so not really looking for critique here, but don't let that stop you...

'The Burren' and 'Busy Bee' could use some input. These are the first (short) songs that I didn't record direct, - I used an Sm57 on the guitars/amps. They definitely sound better (to me) than direct recording, when I compare them to my other material,...what do you hear?

I enjoyed it dude. The guitar sounded really naural. I've always been on the picking end of the studio wiring so I don`t get far into the advice thing. Sounds like you were having fun... and thats the ticket. I`ve got two battlescarred 57`s that are probably older than most the folks on this forum, I love them. I used to do live reinforcement and the 57`s & 58`s handled anything from kicks to violins.. I listened to your other stuff by the way. I like the grooves, the guitar is nice and fat wooden sounding. Drums are a little thin on the other pieces.

"Busy Bee"

Okay... when the hiss started... to be honest, I thought "Uh oh " but... then the drums/percussion and that awesome guitar come in. Talk about "separation"... that is just freakin' sweet!! The second song in a row on the clinic here, the same jazz style... laid back, non-acid and non-synth... what is that called? Popcorn jazz? Great, anyway you look at it. The guitar is masterful.

Gotta be coming from some good mics/pres and/or console. A good example of nice tracks, from nice mic/pre that is messed up by some type of external noise (hiss) -- (or is that coming from the preamp?) You got GREAT separation, great drum sound... yet you've got that danged hiss

Nice music, BTW.

Glad you enjoyed the tunes and the guitar work....I always slap it down real quick...background noises on The Burren are my kids playing or watching TV .

Some of my other tunes don't seem to have as much hiss as Busy Bee, - maybe because they were recorded direct.
One problem that I have, and I don't yet have a solution, is that, when recording my electric guitar - I get huge peaks at the initial attack of a picked note. So my signal is never very hot, otheriise I'm clipping and each note has that horrible pop/snap sound.

I'm told that I need a brick-wall compressor...

FYi my signal chain is a small Mesa Boogie miked w/ Sm57 -->Joemeek VC3Q--> 16 bit card Dman PCI which is nothing special.....drums are from the on chip synth which are nasty for most beats...so I keep the drums real simple for now...

Ouch... I'm thinking the soundcard is the weak link, here... tho the M.B. probably emits some hiss, too. A good tip I've run across is plugging into a Pod/JStation, then running out into an amplifier on a "Clean" setting and mic'ing it. You can crank the modeler way up, and the hiss from the actual amp is nominal. Sounds great this way.

Maybe Santee Claws could hook you up with at least an Audiophile 2496?

Busy Bee and The Burren are nice easy-listening sort of jazz things. I thought they were fairly well recorded and mixed. A nice sound on the guitar especially.

Very enjoyable to listen to.

i liked these tunes alot!!!! the gits sound great!! and you have some sweet fingers!!! NICE!! i know you were not to worried about the drum sounds on these, but on "the burren", the kick is distorting, and it's taking way from an otherwise nice mix. drop the levels on the kick, and it would really tighten that tune up!!
