Illuminatius Overlordious
So wrote, recorded and mixed this today.

I just learned how to group tracks and sends in Cubase. And i have a new guitar recording set up where I am splitting a stereo signal to an amp and micing it and the other direct to the mixer.

So let me know what you think of the tone and levels and effects.

The performance is far from perfect, but this was only the 3rd time we played it - still working out arrangements and such :)

:drunk:

Thanks

Kick and snare sound OK to me, the rest of the kit so-so.....
Timimg is atrociuos at times. Guitars sound very lifeless, voice at times pitchy.
I repeat myself each time anyone says they're still working on the arrangement/recording....what is the point of posting unfinished songs?

I agree with Joey. This is brutal. And what's up with the snare rolls? They sound retarded. I like how it speeds up later in the song, but it's really pretty sloppy and the sounds just aren't very good. The guitar is scratchy and thin, the kit sounds like a bad drum machine. The bass sounds good to me. The song itself isn't too bad, but yall need to play it way better than that. This song is too basic and simple to be played that badly. :D

Those rolls made me laugh so hard. But really, a good song. Just keep doing what you're doing.

Hey arcadeko - I can hear potential with the tune, but even if one allows for some pretty non traditional sorts of sounds (which I am receptive to) there are some odd choices here and some timing issues that overshadow the song.

The drum fills are the biggest offender for me. They somehow manage to sound robotic and chaotic at the same time, which is odd.

The guitar tone is really strange too. Like a small SS amp - kind of grainy and thin. It could be cool as an effect in another context to be sure, but all by itself here it stands out.

I don't mean to pile on or anything. Again, I like the basic idea of the tune and dig the energy conveyed here, just maybe focus more on the timing, the guitar tone and your pitch. Keep at it :).

I was just going to let this whole post disappear but I figure I should at least explain the situation :)

We actually recorded this as kind of a scratch track to develop a song. We put it together and recorded it in under an hour - I know the performance is awful - we never practiced it :) - when we come up with song ideas i hit record so we can listen to it and then come up with the finished arrangement, etc. and turn it into a song.

Anyway - I started messing with the mix and paying with grouping tracks and stuff and thought the mix was sounding pretty good and I wanted to make a new cubase template - so I posted it to get some thoughts on the mix and tone. - We have a lot of work to do to make it into an actual song :)

I just started doing a new recording method for my guitar and I am still working it out.

Anyway - thats the story - I probably should have waited to have a better version before I posted.

Despite comments from much admired contributors, I think this is exactly the kind of thing that should be posted to a "mp3 mixing clinic".

Whatever you do in the mix, don't forget the energy. I think there is energy here.

The problems for me are mainly the guitar and the bass. The guitar has a kind of ugly "squishy" sound that I want to plug into another amp, or at least add some sparkle (like a spring reverb - or a fake spring reverb in your computer).

The bass has a nice top but no bottom end power that the song may or may not enjoy... try a DI box for that.

Keep it up... and have fun.

I think this song has potential...some times it reminds me of the talking heads

I liked the change in tempo idea

On the basic performance mix level Id agree that the drum rolls were'nt great though the actual drums sounded ok..the guitars sounded very crunchy with no real body..like that is just a quick live recording...it would need some layering, I think the tone sounded digital to me (prolly a real amp, Im no guitarst)

for some reason I could hear a synth through this...dunno if it would make it feel less sparse, just a simple pad or lead following the bass??

keep at it...there plenty to work with
