Just now getting my feet wet with a midi based recording rig for at home, but can't seem to find a great way to get it to respond well. I get random notes being struck during playback, sustain pedal sticks, and other small problems. If you know the optimal settings or if you can help me trouble shoot it is much appreciated.

Tascam US144-MKII
Kurzweil CP3K8 - Keyboard
Sonar 8.5 Producer

I would like to record a midi track, then play back and re-record as audio to use the sounds in the keyboard. I believe I have it hooked up right and the routing correct, but I don't understand how the settings should be in Sonar 8.5. This system is working, just working crappy. I have a top of the line i7 - 12gb ram computer running 64 bit with Windows 7.

Thanks,
Joe

The key to low latency and every oither problem you're having is using ASIO drivers. Try this:ASIO4ALL - Universal ASIO Driver.

Also, turn the 'local' setting on your Kurzweil to 'off'. This will help with the random notes.

And midi tracks can be 'read' or interpreted by any keyboard with a midi port. Yours is a simple setup and should dbe hooked up as simply as possible with the midi out of the interface to the midi in of the keyboard, and the midi out of the keyboard to the midi in of the interface. You don't mention an interface, and if you don't have one this M-Audio USB Uno 1X1 MIDI Interface | Musician's Friend will be all you need for now since you're only recording midi and have microphone preamps on the Tascam cassette machine.
