Hey y'all,

I remember a while back seeing a thread that mentioned that Tascam (I think) was manufacturing R2Rs again (just one or two models). I've searched, but I can't seem to find it.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Thanks

If I'm correct there is one model they still make. What the model number is eludes me at the moment. If memory serves me, it was around $3000 and had an 8 week lead time. I'll have to do some digging through my emails and bookmarks to come up with more info.

I pretty sure that tascam dropped R2Rs quite some time ago. TSR8 was the last, and it went out of production about 10 years ago I think.

Those Otaris are the last, and they're a 2 track mastering deck. if you want multi-tracking decks, you gotta shop the used market.

The last TASCAM machine was the BR-20 which they dropped in 2004, as I recall - relatively recently. I think the TSR-8 was dropped in 2001, but I could be mistaken.

If you have truly a colossal amount of money, ATR are selling 2" 8-track machines. Other than that, you'll have to look on ebay, or a specialist gear broker.

The only drawback I see to the Otari is that it doesn't have a closed loop transport. Other than that, I might spring for one of those later this year.;)

wow, I'm shocked that tascam was still making that stuff as recently as four years ago. was the br-20 a two track mastering deck? I tend to only think of 4 tracks and up when this question comes up, I guess cuz I am more interested in stuff like 8 track formats I think of those first...

BR-20..........that's what I was trying to think of. So they quit production 4 years ago? Oh well, looks like the Otari is the best bet for new 4 track/2 channel. I've still got to get all of my RT-909 machines up and going 100%.

Shortly afterwards it became impossible to get new capstan motors and similar parts for them, so I wonder if they sat there making machines until they ran out of parts or something

That's a little unusual for them not to have parts available. Then again, capstan motors seem to be the single hardest part to locate for any model of open reel machine.:( I need 2 of them.

The 32, 34B and BR20 where still being made in 2000. The BR-20 half-track was the last to go just a couple years ago, and can still be found new. :)

Didn't know that. Problem whith Tascam and a lot of other's is they simply don't get the word out, and yet they put so much into producing a product? When people make software, a lot of different people are involved right from the start, putting in their 2cents worth and beta testing.....

There is plenty of afordable working ageing machines around, but it won't be forever:D There is not a lot in them its just they have to be manufactured. If somebody made them now they would probably be all plastic and you would find that there is not realy much difference either?:D

anyway

The BR-20 had something like a 15-year production run - not too shabby...

Br-20

BR-20 are quite nice.....
