I'm sure you've all noticed that if you lift both of your negative speaker leads, but keep them tied together (like a poor headphone sleeve connection), that some parts of the music "disappear" and others become more obvious.

I'm wondering if this could be used to analyze the recording/mixing techniques of song you might be trying to emulate (rip off). In other words, does this reveal which parts are recorded in stereo or mono, or any tricks used in the recording that you don't catch when listening normally?

Any ideas?

I doubt you will hear any mixing secrets that you wouldnt normally hear.

I'm not quite sure what you are doing but it sounds like your just reversing the phase on the speakers so they sound like crap ;)

The trick that is usefull for is if you want to have live speakers playing while recording vocals you can run a mono signal thru the monitors and put one speaker out of phase. Place the mic in the middle of an equilateral triangle with the monitors. The resulting phase cancellation in the mic will lower the volume of the monitor bleed on the vocal tracks.
