New Recording Laptop? Yes or No?

Howdy , Im pretty set on going out for a laptop on black friday. I'm going to pick one up for about 400 dollars with 1.8 ghz processor , 512 mb ram and 60 gb hard drive. If all goes well , I will be upgrading the ram to at least 1 gb and buying an external usb hard drive to accompany the laptop. Im questioning its capabilities to handle recording as I will be using a Firepod or MOTU 8pre interface. Will this application be way too demanding for a laptop or should it be able to handle it well? The computer will be used 80% for recording as the primary use. Is this a bad route to take for my recordings? Id like the easier transportation of my equiptment and compact "studio".

So , will it be able to run my recording demands without troubles?
Should I shy away from laptops for recordings by all means?
How do you feel about my situation? Thank you , sorry if this is in the wrong forum. :)
 
1.8Ghz what?

Celeron? Core Duo? Core 2 Duo? Athlon64? Sempron? Turion?

If you're looking at $400, I would assume it is a Celeron or Sempron processor. If so, they are pretty much useless for anything other than running MS Office or browsing the Web...

You don't even say what software you plan on using...
 
1.8 ghz Centrino Core Solo Intel processor. I plan on running Cubase LE or SE as my recording software. Sorry for my lack of clarity in my first post. The same questions apply. I dont know how much the software requires from the processor. Please excuse my lack of knowledge. Thank you for any assistance.
 
I have an Asus 1.8 centrino with a 40GB 5400rpm drive and I've done 8 tracks no problem with a firepod
