New price on SP mics

I've just seen the new price on the Studioprojects in the U.K.
All europeans, check this out:

Hmmm... Are SP's mics shipped directly from China to Australia or do they arrive by some other convoluted route? Seems like we get slugged extra here even taking the exchange rate and other factors into account. I figure the SP mics should be at least 25% cheaper here in Oz than what they are in relation to OS pricing.

That seems to be about average in relation to US versus Australian instore pricing. Although the exchange rate is roughly two Aussie dollars to one US dollar, we get slugged 3 to 1 by the time we get into the store. So a $79 USD Studio Projects B1 costs us $259 AUD here!

I'd be very surprised if they come directly here from China. I would think they'd first go to PMI and then distributed internationally. If I were Alan, I'd want to send each unit through my own QC before they went out. But that's just me.

And the reason we pay more than double the USD price here is purely a suply & demand issue. Although I'm sure a couple of Australian importers are making a little more than they should.

I have just been doing calcs over the SP range, comparing US list prices against our RRP (essentially the same thing) as well as these UK prices.

As an example......the C1 is US list $299, Aust., RRP $649 and the UK price (which may or may not be recommended retail before discounting) of 135 Pounds.

The T3 is US $799, Aust., $1599 and UK 300 Pounds.

Some of these prices just don't add up and Mark, I reckon you are correct about the importers profits.

What I can't understand and is pissing me off, is that there is no consistency in the price variations if you look across the SP range and I don't see how there can be any justification in putting a higher margin on one model than another.

I think it's time Alan had a real close look at this, because on principle I will not at this time deal locally, or recommend SP to anyone else here in Aust., while the pricing structure is as is.

I'ts frustrating, as I'm as happy as the proverbial "pig in shit" with my C1.

I got my B1 shipped in from the states shortly after they were released. even though shipping was extortion(35 USD), it ended up being 205 Australian. This is months before they were available over here and it still cost me less than what the street value seems to be now.
It just comes down to the fact we don't have a huge market for this gear over here, and only a few stores carry the Studio Projects products. I live in perth, and there is no-one here that Im aware of that sells them locally. Im moving to melbourne in a few weeks and Im hoping there will be a bigger market there, but themove is going to stop me buying equipment for a while...

I think you'll dig it. It's a hell of a little mic for the price.

It so totally sucks that the Aussies here (and yes Neil I know you're English ) have to pay such inflated prices. You Aussie folks must get good deals on Rode mics though... do you?

Maybe we could get Americans who want Rodes and Aussies who want SPs work together.... each sends the other a money order for the price of the mic plus postage, each buys the mics, then the Aussie sends the American the Rode and the American sends the Aussie the SP...

Would it be worth it to do so? And does everyone here trust each other enough?

Believe it or not, you guys are usually able to get better deals on RODES.

The reasons are essentially as follows;

Rode import capsules, electrical components, and possibly other items (which they don't tell us about). They machine the cases and assemble locally.

Normally anything they import has taxes and import duties payable.......BUT, if these imported components are being exported as parts of, in this case mics, then there are NO import duties or taxes on those components.

However, in the case of mics sold on the domestic market, then those taxes, etc., apply.

Considering Rode ship mics by the container load to the US, (you figure how many mics can fit in a shipping container ), the shipping cost per mic is insignificant as opposed to Rode sending for example 6 mics to a local retailer at local courier freight costs.

So what Rode are saying is that it not only costs more to make mics for the local market, but it also costs more per mic to ship them. Consequently, they are able to offer better deals in the US.

BTW, this was told to me in a phone call to Rode.

Interesting development.
It should mean less postal costs and no import taxes if I would buy one. UK V.A.T. is 17,5% and Dutch V.A.T. is 19 %.... That should make 67.85 pounds -> €104,46 plus P&P.

christiaan.. I paid german VAT when I ordered from there.. You could check with your "IRS" to see how things work.. It's also a bit different when the order is €2200, and the Swedish VAT is 25%.. Felt good to know I only paid the german...

Funny you say that....... My Dad id Australian, so I actually am. the best damn country in the world.

But hey, born in the US of A (Fort Lauderdale) so I can empathise with all the yanks too.

As for the prices. Seems good to me. But we all get ripped off in some way compared to the Americans.
You guys get sm57's so cheap compared to Europe, but on the other hand we get (in my opinion, the superior) Sennheiser evolution series mics cheaper here than in the US or Australia. I guess its six of one, half a dozen of another.Hmmmmmm.......

And just for laughs............there have been strong rumours within industry people for some time that Shure are having one or two of their best sellers made in Asia. I have been told by 2 Shure retailers locally that the 57's are coming from China.
