New preamp causes delay in recording

I recorded some songs set to midi tunes in Garageband. A rapper guy I know checked it out and set me up with his preamp and mic so my sound would be improved. Trouble is, now when I hear my midis and sing to them, the playback voice track is delayed by half a second...not synched to the sound. Should I go back to my beginning (nasty) set? Should I record anyway and try to sync all my vocal tracks to the midis later? What's going on?

It's called latency. If you use direct monitoring, you'll be okay. What you're hearing is your computers delay of processing your track and then playing it back to you.

Alright, what is direct monitoring? How do I set it? Is it on the Mac or on the equipment? Remember, I've got Rapper Dude's equipment now......

if garageband doesn't have the ability to set latency low enough, or provide a direct output, just play the the MIDI and the vox out to an amp - speakers or headphones and sing along with that. after recording, if the recorded vox are off (timing), just align them with the midi in garageband later.

so you need something to send you vox to the amp and mix with the MIDI output (audio). maybe an external mixer or your preamp can do this?

My problem is solved! Thank you so much for taking the time.....!
