Create when I "smoke".......... Record when I don't "smoke".
Indica to create............ Sativa to record
Cheers

Interesting philosophical topic. I was having a similar discussion with my guitar player a few months ago when he showed up drunk on whiskey come recording time and then went all Pete Townsend in the studio. I chastised him for his condition and he said something about practicing with a buzz and recreating the magic in the studio.... with the same buzz. I had to remind him that recording was work time and not party time.

Now I don't drink. At all. So my buzz comes from "smoking". When it's time for me to record, I normally "smoke" about 50% less than what I would during practice time. But even then, setting mikes, setting input levels, the process of prepping to hit the record button, takes some time so by the time I'm recording, the buzz is mostly gone.

As an experiment later on, I was recording guitar and vocal and I got a really good take. So my friend suggested I "smoke" a considerable amount more and record another take. Nothing to lose or gain, so we tried it. I think we were both surprised to find that the second take was the better one. I mark the experience down as further evidence that as "detrimental" as "smoking" allegedly is, drinking is far worse.

Now I still don't "smoke" full throttle when recording, at least not until I get the good take 👽

HAHAHA, this is so funny, but relevant, at least to me. I am not a "stoner", but like a nice little buzz. The goldylocks, not too much, not too little, just right. I do create when I have a buzz, like to jam, but I just create a "scratch track" so I can remember what the hell I was doing. Then I come back in a more focused mood ;) and set about the task of organizing and structuring. Probably most of us are pretty close to this, whether drinking or smoking (no acid as I heard the guitar tends to melt in your hands).

So you bust the chops of your bandmate for being drunk - but give yourself a pass on smoking weed?

Haha, maybe I need to clarify beyond my Pete Townsend description.

I feel I shouldn't have to explain this but I guess I must. My bandmate was drunk enough to bump his head on the guitar mic and strumming so hard that he clipped several times. That is drunk. Someone can drink alcohol and get a little buzz and still perform in a satisfactory manner. Moderation is key.

Same with cannabis. Someone can toke a small amount and get a little buzz and still perform well. Some may burn a blunt and hit a foot tall bong and their performance will reflect it. Moderation is key.

So there is a huge difference between being wasted on whiskey and having a little beer buzz. Same as there is a difference between having a little weed buzz and being so high you can't come down.

Your question is fallacious because it indicates the great quantity of alcohol consumed (drunk) while at the same time comparing that to simply smoking weed. Maybe you need to be informed that simply "smoking weed" will not make someone bump their head on a mic or dig into the guitar until clipping.

Obviously you haven't watched this documentary on the evils of smoking.

Sounds to me like there is a consensus about if a person is creating, they may need to be under the influence of something, but if they are recording/mixing/etc., they should be at least able to walk across cable without tripping. And the deciding factor, after browsing through the 'old thread', is honestly how addicted they are to whatever it is that gives them a buzz.

Dunno if anybody gives a shit, but my current favorite drink is Coconut Rum + Pineapple Juice. I'd like to at least try Vodka sometime.

My two cents are, however it is you get your buzz, just don't let it take over your life. I got addicted to something, and it ruined a chance I had to get ahead in life, big time.

Very good points. While some folks may "need to" be under the influence to create, I see it as something that may or may not be around at the time in which said creation takes place. I haven't read the entire old thread but do agree, and have already stated, that moderation is the key to maintaining any sense of control over whatever substance tilts one's kilt.

I used to love coconut rum but did not ever mix it with pineapple juice. I'm trying to remember the name of it, like Captain Morgan's Parrot Island or something long like that. I think there was also Malibu. Those sound better than vodka IMHO.

It can make you forget you are playing guitar to contemplate the bird outside.
Yeah, but that bird might inspire a new song, so I would let it ride and pay attention to the bird for a minute.... said Sir Paul McCartney :guitar:

Personally I think smoking pot makes one not only stupid, but lazy.

I quit my last project because everyone except me was blazing up in every rehearsal.
All good musicians, and thank god for muscle memory!
But the work ethic, and drive to be the best they could be was severely lacking. The metric of accomplishment was that we made it through the whole song. No attention was paid to doing it well, only to get through it.

It was very frustrating to me because I wanted more.

So I quit. Oh well. I’m not a fan of dealing with potheads in a band situation.

That is the main reason I am careful, I really don't want to have to replace stuff because I was stupid, hopefully I am smarter than that now :)

I would do the exact same thing if they could not light up in moderation.

As somebody who believes pot needs to be given the alcohol treatment (nobody does it until they are an adult, nobody does it while driving or operating heavy machinery, nobody gives it to kids, etc.), somebody really ought to show them how they perform drunk vs sober. Maybe they'd try getting off of it. Maybe not. At some point in time, it's their responsibility to try and get off their addiction.

Also, nice signature quote; sadly, I have had people accept my advice, and I really wish, for some things I said, I did a better job thinking things through.

This is off topic, but I was looking at the music you have on Soundcloud, and do you mind sharing what the chords are to Dirt Roads #7 - I Can Hear You Coming? The bassline, chords, and arpeggio on the keys are solid.

Key is Bb. Verse - F Min, Bb, Dmin, Amin, Gmin (all with 7th), chorus Gmin, C, Edim, Bb, Amin. And thanks for the listen.

Bb is a rather nice key. Not as exotic as a lot of people think. Doesn't stray too much from C and is not difficult to play.
