Good stuff. Rock or very palatable Alternative I would say. Sounds good even on low-fi (having trouble with my stuff and can't use hi -fi right now).Vocals sound a little Blues Traveleresque. Not a knock, just an observation. Well written and well arranged. What kind of stuff are you using to record?

Folks,

Isn't it weird how a song will evolve as you're laying down the tracks -- how it can completely change from what you intended?

Anyway, I think I ended up with a Pop/Rock tune here.

Please listen to the song called "MORNING LIGHT" here: http://www.mp3.com/smartapple

Listen to the hi-fi version if you can.

Thanks for the input everyone once again!

Naw...too heavy for pop...

Rock N' Roll doood...

Very good as usual Mr. Ted.

Ya know, pop used to mean "popular" instead of "pop" as in "commercial fluff"...this is a good rockin' song and has the potential to be popular....it's got a good vibe...and I could hear it on the radio, but it ain't fluff...this is good stuff...and any good song that becomes popular on its own merits instead of slick marketing is the real deal...gibs

Hey Teddie, great work once again. You flat out play that guitar. To my ears this song cried out for a wah, sorry for the pun, just a thought.

Nice programing on the drums, did you say that was a Boss machine? Sounds much more real than my old sr-16.

Recording sound perfectly balanced, to me. You have a very different voice, does not sound like anyone, that's good!!

Hey Teddie, great song, sounds good! I'll have to listen a little more closely but nothing jumps out at me as being bad. I was listening to it in the background as I was doing something else and I figured out who your voice reminds me of...the guy from Living Color. I don't remember his name. Good job, I await more!

Whew! I agree with Gibbs this aint no fluff this is the good stuff!

Just a matter of time for you my friend, the right people/right place/ and your off! :D

As for as this tune being "Pop" call it what you want, but it's just great music where ever you place it. Rock on Bro!

David

Yeah it sounded like "pop", mostly due to the structure and the way the chords change in the bridge, but So What? If the music's good (and this is) who cares if it appeals to more people than the "out there" stuff.

That song totally rocks, dude!

Pop song? Sure! Why not?

Great phrasing on the vocals and killer guitar tones.

I just wish it was a bit longer, though.
A 30 second guitar solo would put that one over the top!

I "chair-bobbed", as I call it, through the whole thing. You've got a real knack for a good arrangement - and the great hooks don't hurt! Keep up the good work. I hope you'll let us know when you release a CD.

For what it's worth, I happen to think "Which Way?" would make for a stronger single. It's a great song, and I can't think of a single thing on the radio that sounds like it.

You all are great... just great I tell ya. I'm responding to each person below:

Ric, thanks. Hey, I got my voice up there on a few of the harmonies. hehe.

gibs, thanks much. Yah, I remember when "pop" meant "popular"... I think that transitioned in the mid or late 80's? I dunno. "Pop" has a funny conatation to it now, or at least when I hear that word referred to under the topic of music. I dunno. Thanks for the compliment. It's very encouraging.

GT, "cried out for a wha"... PAH! I read that and chuckled at the pun. Was that accidental? Anyway, out of curiousity, do you mean "wha" within the rhythm or on one of the solos? Do you mean like in the rhythm, like that chik-wha chik-wha chiky-wha chik wha? Thanks for listening, by the way. Regarding the drums, psst. don't tell anyone, but I actually increased the tempo of the drums for my other song "The Dream" to play some rhythm ideas on my guitar against it... The root drum loop is from The Dream at about 120 rather than the 80 or so that I had it set to The Dream. I changed most of the fills and transitions I think. I used to own a BOSS Dr. Rhythm, but the one I'm using now is a Roland R-70. Thanks for the compliment on my voice. CMiller has made an comment that alot of folks have said to me -- read below.

CMiller, thanks for listening to it. Have you had a chance to listen more closely? What did you think of the mix? You know, a lot of people have said that very same thing about my voice sounding like that gentleman from Living Colour. I actually used to listen to them alot but I don't know if it's actually an influence or does my voice naturally want to do that kind of sound. Interesting. Lemme know what you think of the mix if you get a chance to hear it again.

Ray J, I didn't even think about Blues Traveler until you said that, but I can see where you're coming from. Do you mean the harmonies throughout the verses? Just out of the blue, I like Blues Traveler but there's this one song, I think it's called "Hook" or "the Hook" that I really dig the harmony parts they do on that. I'm using a Gibson Guitar into a Pod directly into my soundcard, and a Fender Bass into a SansAmp DI directly into my soundcard, and an SM-57 mic into an ART MP directly int... you get the idea. The drums are a Roland R-70 unit. Thanks a lot for listening to it.

David, you're too kind man. Thanks much for the encouragement.

drstawl, thanks for listening and for the input. Yah, I thought it sounded a lot like a "pop" song or whatever. It was just so much more up-beat than what I'm used to doing, but I really like the song. My wife laughs at me when I play it because I automatically do my "stupid" dance when I hear it. She's not sure if she likes it yet. She likes "Thunder on the Mountain" as her favorite.

Buck62, thanks! It's kind of funny -- I finished laying down the first few tracks and noticed that my file size was really small and I thought I had screwed something up, but then I looked at the total time and it's shorter than all my songs - even shorter than "The Dream". I hope I'm not "trending" subconsiously into making each song shorter and shorter until there is just a kick drum sound and then a "YEAH!" and then the remaining hiss is faded out to end. I'm going to try and at least make my next song a typical song length. I think it's like 3 to 4 minutes (?)

Eurythmic, hehe, I do something similar to "the chair bob" thing you speak of, but it's more elaborate... my wife laughs hysterically at me. Thanks alot for listening and for the compliments. I will definitely let you know when I have enough for a CD. I was thinking maybe 8 more songs. I dunno. Regarding "Which Way?", so far my friends and family that have heard that song have had an instant reaction to it (not like allergic) a good reaction. I really love "Which Way?". It was the first song I multi-tracked digitally using PowerTracks 6. It has a nice mood to it that builds to the end (my opinion). Thanks again for listening and for the input.

Thanks everyone - as always, I truly appreciate and respect your input.

Keep up the good work Teddie, to answer your question about Blues Traveler, I guess its the cadence as well as the harmony that struck me as Blues Traveleresque specifically on the verses. I also like the way you went into and out of the solo, particularly coming out of it, jumping right into the verse sounds particularly good in this song. Your vocal style is simular to mine the way you bend the pitch and hit a few blue notes on the way, I heard it in the other song of yours I listened to, It just feels good to do that sometime. Peace ...out.

OK Teddie, I've listened to it several times. Actually I've listened to it a lot because I like it. You're playing two guitars in the rhythm here right? It might be cool to make each guitar's tone slightly different. That would give the guitar section a little more presence. I say that because I think the guitar is a little bottom heavy. Because of that I can't distinguish the bass guitar, and I likes me bass guitar to be heard!

Other than that, everything sounds great. I love your vocals as usual. The harmonies are perfect. I like the drum part too. The mix is great, I like where everything is positioned, I really like what you did with the vocal panning in the chorus. I like how it opens up and spreads eveything out...that's a neat sounding trick. You do something similiar during the end of the guitar solo...I like that too.

So what is my final summation? It sounds great. I'd still like a little more sizzle on the guitar, but everything else is kick ass. I really like the song.

Dude,
Checked out the MP3's, as well as a couple other on your site. I think the song is catchy enough and just this side of really heavy, so sure I'd say it could be pop music. Your recording and production quality is great. I'd agree with the above poster that I like guitar sounds with a little sizzle in them. Try turning up the presence on your amp just a bit to see if you can get it cut through a little more, this is my favorite way to bring a high-gain guitar sound to the fore without stepping on the rest of the mix.

I was thinking wah on the lead, with who, when, and where, coming up from behind.

It's a running pun, sorry.

This song rocks! But Which Way? is still my favorite. Better than a lot of the crap thats on the radio. Calling it Pop doesnt give it justice.....BTW, which soundcard are u using?

Great Song! It flowed all the way to the end... no dead space feeling.

Teddie:

I really like that tune. Sounds very tight. Hard to believe you're a one man show. I especially love the production of the vocals (i.e. the interplay b/t the BGVs). Well done!

Is it pop? Well I suppose that's relative, but it certainly is catchy. Keep pluggin'.

BTW, do you gig around much?

Ray J, yeah.. doing the blues thing with a your voice or a vocal definitely feels good. That's where a lot of my emotion comes through (or tries)...

CMiller, I'm glad you like it (and the mix overall). You're absolutely right about the bass on the elec. guits. Lemme tell you a story of, well, yesterday - I took my CD and I taped it to Position II tape so I could listen to it in my Jeep. I was cranking it. The song "Morning Light" came on and it was just saturated with boom... not good. Was throwing my cone all over the place. I noticed another one that does that in my Jeep is "Thunder on the Mountain". I tried remixing but haven't uploaded the MP3's yet. I will tonight. Thanks for hearing the boom and letting me know. I guess basically, the low ends on the elec. guits. were using up the frequency space that the bass guit. wanted to use. I remix... I remix... I remix... It's what we do...

XXX Music, thanks for listening to it and for the compliments. I've done a little remixing on this one to try and take out some of the low freq on the guits. I checked out your site by the way. I'm speechless. I've never really seen anything like that. Good luck with your venture. Hang tuff.

GT, yeah, but WAHt do you mean?

Gidge, thanks much for listening. "Which Way?" is still my favorite as well. The soundcard I'm using is the onboard sound that came with my motherboard (an ASUS KM7) the sound chippies are/is a Yamaha SG-X (?) something like that.

Fishmed and BigKahuna, thanks for listening. I'm truly glad you liked it!
