new monitors ... ns-10s

Those time pieces do look like they could be a mighty speaker... I won't let my eyes judge what my ears haven’t heard but they seem to be built on solid concepts.
Their web site is pretty cheesy though :p

I think I am still a little too much of a newbie to be judging the quality of mixes, all I can say is that everything sounds clearer and better with the B&W except for my own recordings... which I can now hear the suckiness much better than before.
First things I said when I listened to one of my own recordings with the B&Ws... "WTF was I thinking with all that reverb?" "WTF is that noise? Oh my Behringer..." "Why didn’t I hear that clipping on the vocals before?"

But my recordings are simple... Keyboards and vocals. And I have a classical voice, so my needs are different than 90% of the guys on this board.

I was listening to an MP3 of Franco Corelli and I tell you, with the lights out and my eyes closed it sounded like I was right there at the met. If I had to make a recording / mix like that I don’t know how I would do it without a pair of speakers that could recreate that illusion. To me that’s like a painter painting with one set of colors and the viewer seeing another, doesn’t make any sense.

But on the other hand… Pavarotti sounds like SHIT on most speakers. I bet if he was mixed on ns-10s he would sound better. Or maybe it’s just that his voice is just too much for most mortal speakers. Before I buy a speaker I give it the Pavarotti test… if he don’t sound good, I don’t buy the speaker. I bet the ns-10s fail the Pavarotti test.

My whole complaint here is finding rock that sounds good on my hi-fi system. Jazz usually sounds great, but rock usually sounds like ass, no dynamics at all, It's all squahed to shit.Have heard a couple Ozzy CD's that were pretty good.

I'd agree with that 100% but to me that is the result of over zealous mastering NOT the choice of mixing monitors.

I thought their site was pretty cool except for the fact the sounds got annoying. They have a 3d model you can rotate which I thought was really cool. B&W has the same thing, I don't think I have seen anybody but those 2 do anything like that before.

Been there...done that. I hear ya.

I believe exactly the same way..........now. Took along time to figure out my monitors were crap. Now I don't have to worry about shit that i didn't hear, it sticks out like sore thumb.

Ahhh.......... the scientific method. Sounds like a good way to determine a good speaker to me. I haven't heard the music, but if it's a standard for you that you know is well recorded, great idea to always use it as a testing standard. I have already named my testing albums earlier in this post. They're really the only recordings I have that I like anymore.

True.......... Ask yourself this though. Why do they over master. Could it be they can't hear what they are really doing to the sound when they change the threshold or attack on the compressor persay. It's not that they may have bad ears....their monitors just might not be telling the whole truth. Which can lead to over zealous adjustments. If not then why can there be such a discrepency between different recordings? If everybody had the same speakers wouldn't life be great? But then we wouldn't be having this discussion would we.

maybe they overmaster because mastering labs are usually filled with audiophile speakers that have absolutely no impact so they cant hear the dynamics they are loosing

actually if you havent been asleep for the last 10 years, you'd know that they overmaster because everyone wants a louder record at ANY cost

I haven't been asleep.....and not EVERYONE wants a louder album at ALL costs.

if you want it louder turn it up I say. They mix for the radio which is compressed anyway so it dosn't matter. I know the facts I just don't like em. Audiophiles speakers without dynamics........huuuuuuh what?
OK then.

There's a reason they came up with the term hi-fi. Why would somebody spend $60,000 for a pair of speakers without dynamics? I guess cause they like to blow money on worthless junk that sounds worse than a PA speaker.

My bad.
