Hi guys. I installed some Studiophiles on Monday and fed the Klipsch's to the dogs. I wanted to test the new ones out but didn't have time to write a whole new song, so I recorded one I wrote about 8 years ago (I was 20). I'm mostly looking for observations about freq's and levels, etc. It's kind of a blues/rock sorta thing with some ambience. I'm aware of a few little pops and a half-ass guitar lead, but it's 95 degrees and I have no AC or time today. Camping tomorrow. :D

First mix on the monitors. Here goes nothing.....

Thanks for the help!

NICE SONG

reminiscent of an ADAM mix I heard recently. It has roughly the same midrange signature and the same depth. The thing is that the ADAM monitors cost $4500.

The mix is pretty good. There are a few imbalances in there. The voice, which has an awesome sound, is a little too loud, and the kick is a too low(so is the snare)

The midrange buildup in the chorus is kinda harsh, which I attribute to the guitars being rather midrangey. You might have to turn those puppies up to hear the midrange.

Oh, by the way, this is an AWESOME SONG. lovely.

funk on!

oh by the way,

with the right production, this song could help you sell a million copies of your CD.

Thanks for the tips CJ. I was finding it kinda Mid-heavy as well, but couldn't find my way out of it, figured I was just getting numb to it. As far as the vox, it's funny. I usually bury them...but you're probably right.

yo SluiCe, great tune BUT the mix sounds bad to me.. It sounds like waaaay too much mid range, and it has a very harsh quality to it.. I can only describe it as 'unwarm.'

this is a really good tune man but the sound is not pleasing to my ears.. Where is the low end? When that heavy part kicks in around 2:40 it is absolutely horribly mid ranged to the balls.. :D Immediate volume turn down went down...

Needs a remix BAD imop holmes..

I totally love the song though..

remix STAT! :D I'll check back later.. Also, give VBR a shot when encoding.. This is over a 10 mb file! :eek:

I'll check back later on

:D

dont mean to sound harsh my man, but your tunes are so good that I listen quite closely and loudly when you put one up.. This song I like a lot but the sound was like a cold knife in my ear..:D

Sam, don't worry bro. That's what it's about. I don't need any candy coated bullshit.

I'm working on the mix now. Finding the chorus challenging. Should have something up soon...I hope.

I guess I have a fear of over bearing bass levels. I'll get past it.

There's a new file up. I dropped an acoustic that had some chorus on it...unneccessary track I should have dropped from the start. Hopefully balanced the vocals a bit better too. Boosted low end and scooped out a small chunk of mid-range real estate that was apparently not selling.

Also, encoded at 192. (8.2 MB)

So...don't hold back on me....I'm sure there's still some spankin to take....

That phrase would work great as lyrics.

Anyhow, I am listening to the update. The midrange is a very interesting area. Thats where richness is, yet too much of it is upseting.

You have successfully changed it from too much to "rich". Nice job. The bass sound is now excellent, and the vocal level is nice. The kick could still come up a bit.

Very nice mix. I think those monitors could be a great investment. The song is still awesome. I have downloaded it to my collection.

Funk on!

Actually that's pretty much what this particular song is about, really, now that I think of it......

Thanks again CJ. I think once I get used to real monitors, I'll be glad I invested.

Geeeeez!!! Ok so let me get this straight. You didn't have a lot of time to spend so you just threw this song down real quick so you could use your new monitors?....... I hate you. :D
I can't say enough about how much I love your songwriting man. (the wind and a tumbleweed is cool too BTW) Everything you do is just fine writing. I heard the new mix and I thought it sounded pretty good. I didn't hear the first one but to my ears this didn't sound unacceptably middy. But I can't really worry about small details in the mix when the songs so good. You have just got to go ahead and pack up and head off to the big time bro.

Thanks a lot Bob. Believe me, these guys were right on about the mids. They were very offensive! :D

It's about 6 AM here and I'm heading to the field and stream til Sunday. I'll work on this some more when I get back...I'm sure this could still use some better mixing, but I hope to get some fresh ears on it...

~~~ I wish all my fellow American Home Recer's a happy and SAFE Independence day...and eveyone else...happy Independence.... ~~~ :cool:
I just want to know:
did you put the ringing phone in there on purpose?
hey sluice,
you have just about become my favorite songwriter here..
Those cymbals are a little loud at times, and although this song is truly great, for some reason I think it could sound better... Maybe mixmkr can describe it intelligently... I dont know what it is but I know it's something.. Again I am being critical because it's you.. If this was someone else who posted this song, I would have said 'great tune man!' and probably left it at that..
I listen to things pretty loud because I am going deaf and dumb, and this song didnt sound that good when I had it cranked.. maybe I should listen at lower volumes.. :D
I truly love this song..
Hey Sluice..........
Another cool song. Noone can accuse you of trying to sound like anyone else, your stuff is definitely original....... and thats a GOOD thing. I am always afraid to comment on mix because i listen to this stuff w/ some little polk comp. speakers that aint all that hot. Just by comparison I might agree that a little more low end wouldnt hurt. One thing I can hear clearly however...... too damn clearly ........is that fucked up ride cymbal :D ........ I too am at the mercy of the canned drum, so i know from where youre coming. The solo at the end was cool, and i love your guitar sounds. Veryyy linear songwriting.....cool ........ to quote a friend and fellow sabbath fan........ .........time for a bong hit!
actually, it sounds a little heavy on the low end to me...until the heavy stuff kicks in...then the vocals get buried too much...but the bass becomes more acceptable. Your writing is great...your best asset...which is a major plus. you have a unique voice too...another major plus, but unusual, that I can see it might be tough to record...and gives the mid-rangy sound a lot of people are hearing. I think you just need to twiddle the mixing knobs a little more and get used to your new speakers, as your other stuff shows the talant is there. Personally, I don't really look at the silk screening on the mixer (for frequencies, dBs, etc), but rather twiddle till it sounds best. so...I'm useless on that account to advise, unless really hardpressed...then I just usually leave the coversation:p ...or I dig out my little chart!!
A little hissy at the end. Can you mute some tracks there to eliminate that?
An escalator to heaven
Cool lyrics. Maybe my ears are morons, but some of the 150~250 Hz area notes on the acoustic get too loud. Snare side-sticking. The low-mids/upper lows are heavy. Nice tight playing, BTW... cool piano. Great to hear the string noise in there right before 4:00 on guitar... nice contemplative song. Kick is low. That's pretty much it as far as crits on the mix -- needs some help between 150~250Hz throughout the mix, maybe some high end.
Nice song!:D
I love the song. I love the production and playing on this one. For me, the mix had way too much low end--in that 120 to 250 range. That creates some mud that obscures some things. Curious that some said it had no low end, but you posted a remix, right? That beautiful acoustic guitar doesn't need any boost, it needs thinning out. There are still some things to be addressed in the mids. Some things seem ok and others seems too bright in the 2-4k region. The vocal needs to come up for me. I couldn't catch many of the lyrics. You could cut back the verb some on the voice too, IMO.
Despite these things, I think the parts are right on and I can hear the quality of the tune and the tracks. There is a perfect mix in there trying to come out. Read Sonusman's thread on mixing secrets in the mixing and mastering forum. Many of the things he mentions apply here. I'd start by looking for any boosts over 6db and pulling those back. I think its all there.
Play some CD's you love through those new monitors and get a feel for how they reproduce the various frquency bands. Then, try to tailor your mix to emulate those CD's. Once you get familiar with those monitors, via well mastered Cds, I think you'll have a much better handle on how to mix this song with them.
Hey, despite the spanking, I hear the quality of your song and voice. This one is gonna sound killer when you do some tweaks. I'm positive!
Magic is impressing.... Good stuff I'll have to check them all...
