new mixer

If you only need 10 channels (depending on the number of XLRs), I'd look into the Yamaha MG12/4 Mixer. If you can step your budget up to $250, I'd go with a Mackie DFX12.

Allen & Heath
Soundcraft

Watch eBay for awhile, you're bound to find a nicer mixer for the same price used as an OK new mixer.
 
Oh, have you considered a Firewire mixer?

What is your recording situation? How many channels of what? What are you recording, and what with?
 
i have a hercules firewire interface with 2xlr ins and 10 quarter inch ins

So I'm assuming you just want to get some decent pres?

If you don't need all the components of a mixer, a nice pre or two is worth it.

How many channels do you normally use? All you can or just a few?

What are you hoping to do?
 
If you just need a Bunch of preamps there are several 8 channel preamps out there with the cheapest being about $100 for 8 Unballanced output preamps(I think it is the Nady PR8)

The Nady PR-8 preamps are pretty terrorable sounding at High gains but are pretty quiet at lower gains so for something like Drums or other loud instruments they might be OK.....

You might also check out the Behringer ADA8000 which has 8 Mic preamps for only about $200 what it even better though is the ADA8000 is also a A/d converter so if you get an ADAT input on your PC you can use the ADA8000 digitaly without plugging the pre"s into your sound card....It is probably the best piece of equipment that behringer makes....

ok sooo on my budget i should go for that behringer pre? can i use it as just a pre or do i have to have adat because i just want it soo i can run the 8 outs into the ins of my firewire and not use the lightpipe?

You were on the right track in your first post. Peavey makes good stuff, and that small mixer is just right for your purposes.

I disagree that the Mackie DFX12 is a better choice than the Yamaha MG12/4.

The Mackie has a grainy sound that I find hard to listen to, especially during a mixdown session. The Yamaha microphone preamps are much smoother and have a fuller range sound that doesn't build up a graininess like the cheaper Mackies do.

Ditto on the Yanaha mixers. Get the Yahmaha later on you will have a big mixer but you will probably never let go of a small mixer with that much quality.
