I just got a new Yamaha MG 16/4 mixer to record onto my computer with. Now, i have my mics all set up (im recording drums now, so induvidual volume control is key), phantom power running, everything seems good. If i activate PFL i get sound and everything seems good. Now, how exactly can i get that sound into my computer to record it? I'm using an iMac G4 with garageband, and sending the sound into the soundcard input (1/8"). i really need help here, i am new to this. in a nutshell, how do i get the sound from my mixer into my computer with the set-up i have?

thanks

there should be either like rec out, or main out, that should be Left and right, stereo which goes into the line in/mic thing on ur imac

ive tried both the RCA REC OUT and 1/4" ST OUT and i get nothing, help me out, and i was only using one 1/4" cable for the ST OUT, PLEASE HELP ME

Maybe you could try something that you know works, like the line out of a CD player into your PC to make sure you can get sound into it. You could also send the stereo out of your mixer into an amp or something to verify there's signal there.

Are the lights lighting up?

And PFL stand for "Pre Fader Listen", basically means "turnded up". To get that sound you need to slide the faders up.

i get no signal when i go from the L ST OUT into a guitar amp. keep in mind im using a 1/4" instrument cable for the connection, could that be it? do i need a 2-way 1/4" splitter so i have a cable from both the L and R jacks?

Something needs to be turned up. There is a gain and fader on each channel, and faders for ST OUT.

turn the gain up, nothing.
turn both the channel and ST Fader up, nothing.

Once again if i put PFL on i get a sound in my headphones.

An easy solution may be to use the headphone output from your mixer (if you're getting a signal there) into your soundcard. Just get a headphone cable or adapter with a 1/4-in plug on one end and an 1/8-in plug on the other.

I don't have a Yamaha mixer, but on my Sondcraft, engaging the PFL on a given channel essentially solos that track. It's meant to get a level on the preamp for that channel. Once that's set, you need to disengage it and set the level to the master bus using the main channel fader. Maybe a simple thing but make sure the channel mutes are not engaged.

i dont know if you're still looking for an answer, but have you made sure you've got the 'big square orange button' pressed in on each channel? i've forgotten to do that some times - it sends the signal to the main stereo out.

you can leave PFL on as well though, if you want to solo an individual track in your headphones.

you might have already done all this though.

i hope that helps,

Andy
